No. 2 Senators post pair of shutouts in sweep

DAYTON, Tenn. — Second-ranked Walters State tossed a pair of shutouts Tuesday afternoon in picking up a doubleheader sweep of Bryan College's junior varsity team on the road.

 

Drew Vaden and Zach Joyce combined to toss a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts between the two hurlers in a 5-0 win in the opener, while Jack Collins allowed just one hit and fanned seven batters in the nightcap as the Senators rolled to a 13-0 victory in a mercy-rule shortened game in five innings.

 

With the sweep, Walters State has won five straight and is 22-4 on the year. Vaden collected his second career victory in the opener, while Collins notched his first collegiate win in the finale.

 

WSCC put up eight hits in the first game, led buy Mason Streater and Max Riemer with two hits apiece and Jerry Hammons hammering his fourth homer of the year. Brayden Combs, Alex Bibb and Michael Robinson all singled in the victory, with Streater and Hammons both knocking in a pair of runs and Xavier Arnette adding an RBI in the contest.

 

The Senators led 1-0 after two innings on an RBI grounder by Arnette, and the lead increased to 3-0 after four innings on a two-run single by Streater. Hammons smoked a two-run homer in the seventh to cap the scoring.

 

Vaden allowed two hits while striking out eight and walking two in six innings of work before Joyce tossed a perfect seventh with a pair of strikeouts to close the game.

 

In the nightcap, Bryce Hodge and JL Bland both had three hits, with Hodge tagging his sixth round tripper of the year, which was a grand slam in an eight-run fourth inning. Braydon Runion and Logan Hullette both added two hits, while Drew Haynie, Jake Jennings, Silas Butler, Parker Stinnett and Hullette all doubled and Arnette had a single. Hodge drove in four runs, while Arnette and Butler had two RBIs apiece and Jennings, Runion, Bland, Stinnett and Hullette all plated runs in the win.

 

Stinnett drove in the game's first run with an RBI double in the second inning, while Jennings ripped an RBI double in the third before Runion, Bland and Butler drove in runs to make it a 5-0 lead.

 

Hodge smashed a grand slam to increase the lead in the fourth, while Butler and Hullette both had an RBI double before Arnette drove in a pair of runs with a single to make the final score 13-0.

 

Collins was never threatened in the contest, as the lone hit he allowed, a single in the fourth, was just one of two base runners for the Lions in the game.

 

The Senators will be back on the diamond Wednesday with a a trip to North Carolina to take on Montreat JV. First pitch is set for noon.
