Marianna, Fla. — It was a struggle for the No. 3 Walters State baseball team on Friday, falling to No. 5 Chipola 3-2 and 6-5 to No. 20 Florida Southwestern in extra innings.
The Senators fall to 3-2 on the season with both losses.
Nolan Letsguz (0-1) got the start for the Senators in game one, throwing four innings and striking out five. Matt Dailey relieved Letsguz in the fifth and pitched two scoreless innings.
Down 1-0 after one inning against Chipola, Walters State struck back in the top of the second. Braydon Runion led off the inning with a single to left. Looking to take advantage of the lead-off hit, Alberto Osuna did just that, blasting his first home run of the season over the fence in center to give the Senators a 2-1 lead. Osuna had two hits in the game.
However, two runs in the bottom of the third proved to be the difference maker for the Indians.
In game two against Florida Southwestern, the offense got going early, scoring four runs in the top of the second inning to stake out to a 4-0 lead. Michael Robinson scored on a wild pitch to start the scoring. Then Caleb McNeely and Runion both singled, McNeely driving in a run and Runion driving in two.
The Senators struck again in the top of the third when Robinson scored on a ball that was overthrown to make it 5-0.However, Florida Southwestern scored six unanswered, capping it off with a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth for the win.
Andrew Lindsey got the start for the Senators, throwing five innings and allowing just one hit while striking out seven. Lindsey gave up two earned runs, three runs total.
Caleb Pearson replaced Lindsey in the sixth, struggling as he loaded the bases with no one out. Nathan Hickman replaced Pearson and got out of the jam, but only after two runs scored to tie the game. Pearson struck out the side in the seventh before giving up the game winning run in the eighth.
