HANCEVILLE, Ala. — Khiry Shelton made sure Walters State finished off its Alabama road trip with a sweep.
Shelton, a Columbus, Ohio native, led the Senators with 22 points and 9 rebounds Saturday afternoon as Walters State rolled to an 86-64 victory over Coastal Alabama-Brewton on the final day of the Wallace State Invitational held at Wallace State Community College. WSCC never tailed and led by as much as 33 in the victory.
With the win, the Senators improved to 8-2 on the season, having now won five straight games while moving to 3-0 in neutral site games and 4-1 in games played away from the Walters State campus.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Warhawks, as they fell to 1-8 on the year.
Shelton did the most damage in the first half, pumping in 18 points on 8 of 9 shooting in the opening 20 minutes, as the Senators built a 42-30 halftime lead.
Demontay Dixon and Kajuan Hale took over in the second half for Walters State, as both pumped in 8 points in the final frame, while Jaden Lewis and Seth Lenard-Battle both added 6 points in the half, as the Senators outscored Coastal 44-34 in the half.
For the game, the Senators shot 52.2 percent (35 of 67) from the field, making 2 of 10 from long range and 14 of 22 fro the charity stripe in the contest. WSCC held a 43-31 edge in rebounding while forcing 14 turnovers and scoring 18 points off those miscues. The Senators also held advantages in second chance points (23-7) and points in the paint (48-30).
Dixon added 16 points for the Senators, while Hale had 10 points and 9 assists. Miles Thomas chipped in 9 points, while Lenard-Battle had 8 points in the victory.
The Warhawks ended the day shooting 37.5 percent (24 of 64) from the floor, knocking down 7 of 26 from long distance and 9 of 18 at the foul line in the contest. Diego Smith paced Coastal with 19 points and 7 assists, while Brandon Phillips added 16 points and 8 rebounds in the defeat.
Walters State will be back at home Tuesday afternoon for a 6:30 p.m. contest against Tennessee Wesleyan's junior varsity squad.
