CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Sly Thompson poured in 26 points for Walters State, but it wasn't enough Tuesday night at Chattanooga State Community College. Keigan Kerby tapped in a layup with two seconds to go, giving the Tigers a 71-70 victory over the Senators on their home floor.
It was a tough way to end the game for Walters State (2-2, 0-1 TCCAA), who battled back from a 38-29 halftime deficit to take a lead, 68-66 in the final three minutes with a jumper from Anthony Jones.
Paris Taylor pushed WSCC's lead to four with a layup with 1:38 to go in the game, but the Senators wouldn't score another point. A three from Chattanooga State's Lorenzo Ferrell cut the lead to one with 40 seconds to go.
With the clock in their favor and possession of the ball, Walters State turned it over with 12 seconds left on a steal from the Tigers' Joshua Conrad. Kerby finished the play with a layup, allowing Chattanooga State (3-1, 1-0) to steal the victory in the last ticks of the clock.
Luiz Machado scored 12 points for Walters State. Anthony Jones had eight points and five rebounds off the bench for the Senators.
Taye Calloway led the Tigers with 13 points. Everette WEilson scored 11 and Ferrell put in 10.
