Senators finish third at Piedmont Invitational

CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — Walters State's golf team rallied for a third place finish at the Piedmont Fall Invitational held on The Orchard Course at The Orchard Golf & Country Club.

 

The Senators posted the second best team score of the day on the final 18 of the 36-hole tournament, as their score of 10-over par 298 moved them from fourth to third in the team standings with a two-day score of 610.

 

Methodist University won the team title with a score of 589, and host Piedmont finished second with a total of 606, finishing four shots ahead of Walters State. Covenant took fourth at 617, followed by Sewanee (619), Abraham Baldwin (630), Mississippi University for Women (652), Cleveland State (656) and Berea (662) in the nine-team tournament.

 

Alex Hodge fired a 68 in the final round, the best round of the day, to finish in sixth place at 3-over par 147 (79-68), while Hunter Blanken ended up in a tie for 11th place at 9-over par 153 (76-77). Drew Linkous was next for the Senators at 10-over par 154 (78-76), while Dane Rheinecker was tied for 22nd at 13-over par 157 (80-77) and Elliott Smith finished tied for 29th in the 56-player field with a 15-over par 159 (79-80).

 

Methodist's Lucas Spahl won the individual title with a 3-under par 141 (72-69).

 

The Senators will be back in action on Oct. 15-16 when they host the Walters State Fall Invitational at The Country Club in Morristown.
