WSGOLF: Senators take early match against Wingate, fall to LMU in nightcap at Bob Dibble Match Play Championship

Walters State shot its way past Wingate in the opening round of the Bob Dibble Match Play Championship Saturday, but couldn't remain in the winner's bracket in their evening tee-off against Lincoln Memorial at Graysburg Hills Golf Club in Chuckey, Tenn.

The Senators took down the Bulldogs in the tie-breaker after both teams finished with 2 ½ matches in the morning session. In the afternoon, it was LMU getting the best of WSCC, 3-2.

The breakfast round was tight all the way through. Freshman Andrew Linkous (Cleveland, Tenn.) shot past Wingate's Darius Choveaux-Gios, 5-4.

Sophomore Stephen Owen (Rogersville, Tenn.) survived his match with a one-point victory as well, defeating the Bulldogs' Wesley Simmons with a 6-5 performance.

Ty Sauceman (Greeneville, Tenn.), a freshman, halved his match against Wingate's James Whitaker.

Freshmen Chad Horman (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Zach Wood (Greeneville, Tenn.) fell in their matches. Wingate's Christian Pickeral won with a 2-1 advantage over Horman and Anthony Parziale took a 2-1 victory over Wood.

In the nightcap, Sauceman defeated LMU's Brady Davis 1-up. Homan bounced back with a one-stroke victory over Hamish McColm with a 3-2.

Owen fell 1-up to the Railsplitters' Harry Boyle, Wood lost 5-4 to Erik Fogel and Linkous was surpassed 5-3 by Dan Bradbury.

Walters State will face off against Mars Hill in the first round of the Third Place Bracket Sunday at Graysburg Golf Club.
