Lady Senators drop first three at Gulf Shores

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Walters State dropped its first three games in the Sun Chief Classic Friday afternoon, dropping its record to 2-6 on the season.

The Lady Senators played a pair of NJCAA Division II top 10 teams, falling in the opener against No. 1 Jones College (1-1), 8-2, before taking a 10-1 loss in five innings against sixth-ranked Illinois Central (2-1) in the nightcap. In between, WSCC dropped a 3-0 decision to Central Alabama (12-2).

In the opener, Walters State notched eight hits as a team, with Jenica Brown and Sydney Fox both supplying three hits in the contest. Sydney Dukes and Keeley Quillen had the other base hits in the loss. Kallyn Newport drove in a run for the Lady Senators with a sacrifice fly.

Jones led throughout, taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning and adding three more in the fourth, another in the sixth and a pair in the seventh before WSCC avoided the shutout with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Delilah Malczewski took the loss after allowing five earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts and four walks in three innings of work. Raylon Smith surrendered three earned runs on four hits and two walks in four innings of relief.

In the second game, Central Alabama took the lead on a solo home run in the first inning and added two more runs in the fourth frame on its way to a 3-0 win.

The Lady Senators were limited to just three hits in the contest, led by Olivia Wheeler with two hits, including a double. Brown had the other hit for WSCC in the loss.

Smith (0-3) was tagged with the defeat after giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits with two strikeouts in four innings. Malczewski tossed the final three frames, scattering a pair of hits and fanning two batters in scoreless relief.

In the nightcap, the Lady Senators struck first on a sacrifice fly RBI from Erin Foster in the top of the first, but that was a short-lived lead. Illinois Central tallied three runs in the home half of the frame and pushed across seven runs in the fourth to complete the mercy-rule victory in five innings, 10-1.

Brown, Dukes, Foster and McCoy Hensley each had a hit in the loss, with Foster's knock being a double. Malczewski (1-2) was saddled with the decision after giving up eight unearned runs on nine hits in three-plus innings of work. Smith allowed two runs (one earned) on no hits and a walk in two innings of relief.

The Lady Senators are scheduled for two more games on Saturday, as they will face NJCAA Division II's third-ranked LSU Eunice at 10 a.m. before closing the trip with a 12:15 p.m. contest against Shelton State.
