Lady Senators split final two at Sun Chief Classic

GULF SHORES, Ala. — After three losses on Friday, Walters State salvaged a split of its final two contests in the Sun Chief Classic Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader against LSU Eunice and Shelton State.

 

LSU Eunice, ranked No. 3 in the NJCAA Division II preseason national poll, put up eight runs in the first two innings and strolled to a 10-2 victory in five innings in the opening game of the day. In the finale, WSCC scored five runs in the first inning and snatched an 8-3 win over Shelton State.

 

In the opener, Sydney Fox hammered a two-run homer for the Lady Senators (3-7) for their only runs of the game. Saylor Johnson added a double, while Jenica Brown and Olivia Wheeler both had singles in the loss.

 

Delilah Malczewski took the loss after giving up eight runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings of work. Keeley Quillen allowed a pair of runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

 

In the road trip finale, the Senators put up a five-spot in the first inning and never trailed in salvaging a win.

 

Sydney Dukes smacked a pair of hits and drove in a run in the win, while Brown, Kallyn Newport, Taylor McConnell, Emily Whitaker, Maggie Middleton and Lexi McDowell each added a base hit with McConnell, Whitaker, Middleton, McDowell, McCoy Hensley and Erin Foster each driving in a run.

 

Raylon Smith was the winning pitcher after scattering six hits and allowing one run in five innings of work before Quillen allowed two runs on three hits in an inning of relief and Malczewski closed the game with a scoreless frame.

 

The Lady Senators will return to Alabama next weekend for a four-game set at Snead State, opening the slate on Friday with games against Snead State at 11 a.m. and Itawamba at 1 p.m. On Saturday, WSCC will face Lake Land at 1 p.m. before closing the trip against Snead State at 3 p.m.
