Lady Senators sweep double dip in Alabama

BOAZ, Ala. — After seeing Mother Nature wipe out the original four-game road swing in Boaz over the weekend, the Walters State softball team finally got to hit the diamond at Snead State Community College Monday afternoon for a doubleheader against the hosts as well as Lake Land.

In the opening game of the day, the Lady Senators put up three multi-run innings and rolled to a 10-2 victory over Lake Land. In the nightcap, WSCC scored all of its runs in the first four innings, including a four-spot in the third frame that broke the game open, in a 7-3 victory over the homestanding Parsons.

With the sweep, the Lady Senators have won three straight games and now stand at 5-7 on the year. The losses dropped the Lakers to 9-7 on the campaign, while the Parsons, who lost to Lake Land 5-4 in the opening game Monday, are now 9-14.

In the first game of the day for the Lady Senators, Kallyn Newport started off what will be a memorable day for the freshman from Seymour with a pair of homers in the win and three runs batted in. Keeley Quillen and Erin Foster both added round trippers in the victory, while Jenica Brown had three hits and Mia Edwardson added two hits with a double and an RBI. Taylor McConnell added an RBI while Emily Whitaker had a double and Sydney Dukes had an RBI in the contest.

WSCC scored a run in the first and two more in the second for a 3-0 lead before Lake Land got a run across in the third and fourth innings to make it a 3-2 game. Walters State responded with three runs each in the fifth and seventh innings sandwiched around a single run in the sixth for the 10-2 win.

Raylon Smith picked up the win after allowing two unearned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts in a complete game effort.

In the nightcap, the Lady Senators and Parsons were tied at 1 after an inning before WSCC pushed across a run in the second, four in the third and another in the fourth for a 7-1 lead. Snead State got two runs in the sixth inning but never threatened in the seventh.

Newport added two hits, including her third home run of the day, while driving in two runs in the win, while Edwardson added a pair of doubles and three RBIs. Sydney Fox had two hits and pair of runs batted in, while Dukes chipped in a pair of hits and Brown and Saylor Johnson both had a hit in the victory.

Delilah Malczewski grabbed the win after giving up three runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts in seven full innings of work.

The Lady Senators will be back on the diamond Wednesday afternoon with a pair of games at Spartanburg Methodist. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
