Lady Senators split pair of one-run games at Spartanburg Methodist

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Walters State split a road doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Spartanburg Methodist, battling the homestanding Lady Pioneers in a pair of one-run games.

 

The Lady Senators led 5-0 entering the sixth inning of the first game and held off the home team, 5-4, to get the win. In the nightcap, It was another early lead for WSCC that evaporated to a two-run deficit entering the sixth frame. The Lady Senators battled back to take the lead but gave up single runs in the final two innings to drop a 10-9 decision.

 

With the split, Walters State now stands at 6-8 on the year, as the loss in the nightcap ended a four-game winning streak for the Lady Senators. Spartanburg Methodist is now 6-7 on the campaign, as the win in the finale ended a five-game skid.

 

In the opener, Walters State pushed across two runs in the first inning, added pair in the third and one more in the fifth for a 5-0 lead. Spartanburg Methodist responded in the sixth with three unearned runs before Lady Senators starting pitcher Raylon Smith was relieved by Lauren Brickey, who got all three outs in the sixth and allowed an unearned run in the seventh before closing out the game.

 

Smith picked up the win after giving up three unearned runs on three hits in five-plus innings of work, while Brickey notched a two-inning save after giving up an unearned run on one hit.

 

Kallyn Newport ripped two hits and drove in a run to pace the Walters State offense, while Mia Edwardson hammered a solo homer in the third inning for the Lady Senators. Erin Foster added two hits, while Emily Whitaker doubled and Jenica Brown, Sydney Fox, Keeley Quillen and Emma Seagrave each had a single. Brown, Fox and Quillen added RBIs in the victory.

 

In the nightcap, the Lady Senators trailed 2-0 after one inning before plating three runs in the second and two more in the third on a two-run homer by Edwardson, her second round tripper of the day to make it a 5-2 lead.

 

Spartanburg tied it in the bottom of the third but trailed 6-5 going to the home half of the fourth, where the Lady Pioneers scored three runs to take an 8-6 advantage into the fifth. The lead didn't last long, as WSCC scored three in the fifth to go ahead 9-8 before the home team scored in the bottom of the sixth to tie it and in the home half of the seventh for a walk-off win after the Lady Senators stranded the go-ahead runner at third base in the top of the seventh.

 

Sydney Dukes roped three hits and drove in two runs in the loss, while Brickey added two hits and two RBIs and Edwardson had the home run with two runs driven in. Brown, Saylor Johnson, Olivia Wheeler and Lexi McDowell each added a hit in the defeat.
