Lady Senators drop doubleheader to No. 16 Lady Tigers

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — Walters State dropped both games of its home opening doubleheader Saturday afternoon, falling to 16th-ranked Chattanooga State in the opener 6-5 before taking a 12-7 loss in the nightcap to also lift the lid on Tennessee Community College Athletic Association play.

 

In the opener, Walters State (6-10, 0-2 TCCAA) scored single runs in each of the first two innings for a 2-0 lead before the Lady Tigers (14-2, 2-0 TCCAA) put up three runs in the third to take the lead.

 

WSCC answered with a run in the fourth to tie the game, but another three-spot by the visitors in the sixth put them ahead for good. The Lady Senators pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh bu could not pull even in falling in the region opener.

 

Jenica Brown, Sydney Dukes, Mia Edwardson and Keeley Quillen each had two hits in the loss, with Quillen and Sydney Fox both belting home runs in the contest. Quillen added a double and drove in a run, while Fox had a pair of RBIs in the defeat.

 

Raylon Smith started inside the pitcher's circle and allowed three runs in three innings of work before Lauren Brickey entered and finished the game, taking the loss after allowing the three runs in the sixth.

 

In the nightcap, Chattanooga State took a 7-0 lead after two innings by scoring four in the first and three more in the second, but the Lady Senators fought back with a two-spot in the third and four runs in the fourth to cut the deficit to 7-6.

 

The Lady Tigers then scored five runs in the top of the fifth, doubling up the Lady Senators before the home team scored one final run in the home half of the fifth to make the final 12-7.

 

Fox had three hits in the finale, with Dukes and Edwardson both adding two hits in the contest. Edwardson, Brickey and Erin Foster all went deep in the loss.

 

Delilah Malczewski took the loss after giving up seven runs before being lifted with no outs in the second inning. Smith gave up three runs in 3 1/3 innings of relief, while Brickey allowed a pair of runs in 2/3 of an inning.

 

Sunday's scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to the threat of inclement weather.
