Lady Senators split opening pair at Southwest

CORDOVA, Tenn. — Walters State saw its six-game winning streak snapped in the opening game of a Tennessee Community College Athletic Association softball road series against Southwest Tennessee, but the Lady Senators rebounded for a win in the nightcap to split the opening doubleheader at St. Benedict.

The Lady Senators trailed the entire game in the opener and let the game-tying runner on third base in the final inning in a 3-2 loss to the Lady Saluqis. The nightcap was the complete opposite, as Walters State took the lead in the top half of the first inning and never trailed in a 9-1 victory.

With the split, the Lady Senators are now 13-11 on the year and 5-3 in TCCAA play, as they ran their road record to 7-2 in true road games and 11-9 overall away from him this season.

The Lady Saluqis are now 18-5 overall and 5-5 in league action, as the loss in the second game dropped their home record to 5-3 on the season.

In the opener, Southwest Tennessee took a 2-0 lead after one inning before Walters State cut into the lead with a run in the third. The home team added a run in the fourth for a 3-1 margin, and the Lady Senators cut it to 3-2 after five before being held scoreless in the final two innings. WSCC got the potential tying run to third base with two outs in the top of the seventh, but a popup to first base ended the game and WSCC's winning streak.

Sydney Fox had two hits with an RBI to pace the Lady Senators at the plate, while Sydney Dukes added a double, Taylor McConnell tagged an RBI single and Erin Foster, Keeley Quillen and Jenica Brown each had a base hit in the contest.

Lauren Brickey (3-2) took the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits in four innings of work. Delilah Malczewski tossed two spotless innings in relief, striking out three of the six batters she faced.

In the nightcap, Malczewski (6-4) ran her personal scoreless innings streak to 24 innings before allowing a run in the fifth inning, but the Lady Senators led 7-0 before seeing the home team get their lone run of the game.

Walters State led 2-0 after one inning and moved that margin to 6-0 after three innings and 7-0 after four before Southwest's tally in the home half of the fifth. The Lady Senators added single runs in the final two innings to complete the eight-run final margin.

Fox had a big game, ripping four hits, including three doubles, while driving in four runs in the win. Emma Seagrave added three hits, while Quillen had two hits with an RBI. Dukes and Saylor Johnson both tacked on two hits in the contest, while Kallyn Newport hammered a three-run homer and Kristen Hall had an RBI single in the victory.

Malczewski allowed an unearned run on four hits while fanning five batters in a complete-game effort, going all seven innings inside the circle.

The two teams will close out the four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader schedule to begin at 1 p.m.
