No. 19 Lady Senators sweep Friday games at Sun Chief Classic, run rule No. 12 Central Alabama

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Coming into Friday with a three-game winning streak, No. 19 Walters State kept the momentum going, sweeping a Friday doubleheader at the Sun Chief Classic Softball Tournament. The Lady Senators had a come from behind in a 7-6 win over Gulf Coast State and run ruled No. 12 Central Alabama, 8-0, in five innings.

 

With the victories, Walters State improves to 7-1 on the season.

 

In game one, the Lady Senators trailed 6-2 going to the fifth inning. After Sydney Fox singled in a run in the fifth to make it 6-3, Walters State scored two more in the sixth on a fielders choice and a Jenica Brown single.

 

In the seventh, the Lady Senators loaded the bases, and Hayley Parrott singled in the tying run. Kallyn Newport scored on a passed ball later in inning for the game-winning run. Kenna Kap finished Gulf Coast off in the bottom of the seventh.

 

Kap (4-0) got the start for the Lady Senators, throwing a complete game. She allowed six runs on nine hits and had three strikeouts.

 

It was an offensive outburst in game two with Newport leading the way. Newport had three hits in the game, two doubles and four RBI. Brown had four hits in the game, scoring three times. Parrott and Kaitlyn Harper each had two hits.

 

Riffle (2-1) took the mound for the Lady Senators and pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits while notching four strikeouts.

 

Up 2-0, the Lady Senators put the game to bed with four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth. The offensive outburst in the fourth was led by Parrott, who opened the inning with a home run.

The Lady Senators will be back in action on Saturday, taking on Northwest Florida at 10 a.m. and Shelton State at 12:15 p.m.
