Terryauna Griffin scores 31 points in 64-44 win over Dyersburg State

MORRISTOWN, TN – Terryauna Griffin scored a season-high 31 points for Walters State on Saturday, as the Lady Senators stayed unbeaten in TCCAA play with a 64-44 win over Dyersburg State.

With the victory, the Lady Senators improved to 8-2 overall and 6-0 in TCCAA play. Walters State have won eight straight games.

"I thought everyone did a good job contributing offensively and defensively," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "We have to keep our focus with finals coming up and two games against nationally ranked opponents.

"Terryauna did an amazing job scoring from all three levels this afternoon and defending at a high level." 

Griffin did her damage all throughout the game, scoring nine in the first quarter, seven in the second, five in the third and 10 in the fourth.

Along with Griffin, Kyra Perkins had 10 points while Raegan Starks had seven. Other scorers for Walters State were Morgan Williams with five, Jahliya McDonald with four, Nyjah Gibbs with three, Alexis Hood with two and Anaya Mulholland-Natt with two. 

Griffin scored six of Walters State's first eight points in the game, with the Lady Senators breaking out to an 8-3 lead. The two teams traded buckets, but Perkins made it 14-5 with back-to-back baskets. Griffin scored one final time in the quarter, knocking in a three, and Walters State led 17-8 after one.

In the second, Dyersburg scored the first five points but Walters State countered with back-to-back 3-pointers by Griffin and Starks that made it 23-13. The lead stayed at 10 after a made shot by Griffin and two Perkins free throws, but Dyersburg scored five straight to cut it to 27-22. The Lady Senators scored five more points in the quarter, as Griffin scored one more time and Starks hit a three, and Walters State led 32-27 at the break.

Dyersburg scored first to start the third quarter, but Walters State responded with seven straight. Griffin had five of those points, while Gibbs also made a basket that gave Walters State a 39-29 lead. Dyersburg broke the run but scored just five more points in the quarter, as Perkins scored four herself to lead Walters State to a 46-34 lead going to the final 10 minutes. 

In the fourth, it was all Walters State as the Lady Senators got their lead to 56-36. During the run, Griffin scored four, Williams hit a three, Gibbs made a free throw and McDonald scored. From there, the Lady Senators held a comfortable lead and took the win.

Walters State will close out the 2024 portion of their schedule next weekend in the Shelton State Classic. The Lady Senators will play No. 11 Pearl River on Saturday, December 14, at 4 pm. ET and No. 7 Shelton State on Sunday, December 15, at 4 pm. ET.
