No. 25 Lady Senators split on Sophomore Day

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — Walters State's nine-match winning streak came to an end Saturday afternoon, but the Lady Senators still split an tri-match inside 'Z' Buda Gymnasium and Assembly Hall to close out the regular season and send the sophomores out on a winning note.

 

Sophomores Mckenzie Jenkins, Hayley Wolfe, Brooklyn Ireson, Kaley Muncy, Sydney Hurd and Micayla Vallie all played their final home matches of their two-year careers, falling to Snead State in the opener in three sets before recording their 10th win in the last 11 matches in the nightcap by sweeping past Spartanburg Methodist in three games.

 

In the opener, the Parsons ended Walters State's win streak with a 25-18, 25-19 and 26-24 victory to improve to 30-10 on the year. In the regular season finale, the Lady Senators rebounded for a 25-23, 25-16 and 25-20 victory over Spartanburg Methodist to drop the Lady Pioneers 13-18 on the season while recording their second match victory in three tries against SMC this season.

 

With the split, Walters State completes the regular season with a 19-8 record and will play for the NJCAA Region VII and Tennessee Community College Athletic Association this coming Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cleveland State against the winner of Friday night's match between the No. 3 seed Lady Cougars and No. 2 seed Chattanooga State. The Lady Senators won the regular season TCCAA title for the second straight year with a 4-0 record.

 

In the opener, Walters State entered having won nine straight matches in straight sets since losing to Snead State in three games on Sept. 22. This time around, the Lady Senators nearly forced a fourth game by fell just shy of moving on to another set.

 

Vallie smashed 13 kills and Jenkins added 8 in the contest, while Courtney Dotson dished out 13 assists and Hurd added 11 helpers. Wolfe tallied 17 digs, while Lexi Wakefield added 16, Vallie had 14 and Hurd had 10 with Dotson chipping in 8 in the loss. Muncy notched 4 kills and 2 blocks in the match.

 

Megan Zuck tallied 12 kills and 16 digs in the win, while Gracie Muncher recorded 22 assists and Gabrielle Bili had 11 assists for the Parsons.

 

In the nightcap, the first set against Spartanburg Methodist was nip and quick before WSCC pulled out the win and took the final two games much easier to complete the sweep and end the regular season in winning fashion.

 

Vallie hammered a dozen kills and Jenkins splintered the hardwood with 10 to lead the Lady Senators, while Dotson notched a double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs. Hurd added 12 assists and 14 digs, while Vallie and Wolfe both added 14 digs and Wakefield had 11 digs in the match. Olivia Kent blocked a pair of attacks in the win.
