Spartanburg, S.C. — It took an extra day after weather wiped out the action Friday night, but Walters State was finally able to line up and race in the 2019 Eye Opener Cross Country Meet at the Roger Milliken Center.
Facing off against a seven-team field in the 8K, the Walters State men finished sixth with a score of 181. Furman University finished first with a 15. USC-Upstate was second with a 59.
On the women's side, the Lady Senators finished in fifth place in the 5K with a score of 152 in the five-team field. Again, it was Furman who won the day with a 15. Wofford's 52 was good enough for second place.
Freshman Jade Mattison (Morristown, Tenn.) was the top finisher for the Walters State ladies with a time of 22:16.8, good enough for 33rd place. Freshman Shyanne McKinney (Morristown, Tenn.) finished 38th with a time of 22:52.0, sophomore Karli Yarid (Morristown, Tenn.) was 42nd with 23:52.5, freshman Lindsey Seagle (Jefferson City, Tenn.) was 45th with 25.22.5, freshman Breanna Scearce (Washburn, Tenn.) was 50th with 30.24.5 and freshman Daniela Medina (Morristown, Tenn.) ran the course with a time of 32.05.6, finishing 52nd.
For the Senators, freshman Chance Collins (Seymour, Tenn.) put for the top time for the squad, running a 30.38.6 to finish 48th. Freshman Christopher Gaby (Morristown, Tenn.) was 51st with 31.33.8, freshman Jacob Manning (Clinton, Tenn.) was 53rd with 32.10.5, freshman Keven Perez-Padilla (Newport, Tenn.) was 57th with 32:34.9, sophomore Andy Villagran (Sevierville, Tenn.) was 60th at 34:13.2, freshman Nicholas Noble (Morristown, Tenn.) was 62nd at 34:59.4 and Austin Coffman finished 65th with a time of 36:58.2.
Walters State Cross Country will be back on the trail on Sep. 27 in Maryville, Tenn.
