No. 4 Walters State’s offensive outburst continues in 32-9 win over Southwest Virginia
CEDAR BLUFF, VA – No. 4 Walters State scored 32 runs on 32 hits Tuesday afternoon in a 32-9 win over Southwest Virginia.
With the victory, the Senators improved to 40-6-1 overall.
The offensive outburst on Tuesday was no anomaly for the Senators. Through their last six games, Walters State has scored 130 runs.
Fresh off his third TCCAA Baseball Player of the Week honor, Tyler Myatt led the way at the plate with six hits and six RBIs. Along with Myatt, Taylor Harris had five hits, including two home runs, and also drove in six runs. Carson Cabbage homered twice and drove in five runs, while Drew Blalock, Nate Conner and Holden Pantier each homered as well. Justin Bell, Jack Vogele and Blalock each drove in three runs.
On the mound, Tyler Welch got the start and threw two innings. Welch allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits and struck out two. Andrew Moore replaced Welch in the third and got the first out of the inning while allowing three runs, before Ryder Moye replaced him and threw the next 1.2 innings. Moye gave up two runs, zero earned, on two hits while striking out three.
Following a two-strikeout fifth inning from Brayden Blankenship, Riley Franklin struck out two in the sixth inning. Rowan Park pitched the seventh inning and struck out two, and Brady Scott threw the eighth inning and struck out two. Mason Trucks pitched the final inning and struck out the side.
Walters State scored two in the first inning, as Vogele singled in a run and Myatt doubled home Vogele. Southwest Virginia scored a run in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to one, but Pantier hit a two-run homer, Harris homered and Conner homered in the second to make it 6-1.
The Flying Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom of the second to make it 6-4, but Walters State added five runs in the third on a Morgan RBI double, a Harris two-run home run and a Myatt two-RBI double that made it 11-4.
After Southwest Virginia cut the lead to 11-7 in the bottom of the third, Walters State blew the game open with nine runs in the fourth. Those runs scored on a Blalock two-RBI single, a Vogele two-RBI double, a Myatt RBI single, a Cabbage two-run bomb and a Harris two-RBI double that made it 20-7. Southwest Virginia scored their final two runs of the game in the fourth inning, and Walters State countered with three runs in the fifth on a Myatt RBI single and Cabbage two-run home run.
In the sixth, the Senators picked up three more runs as Bell tripled in Harris, Bell scored on a fielder's choice and Cabbage doubled home Myatt to make it 26-9. The Senators scoring concluded in the eighth with six more runs when Blalock homered, Brantley Bamberg walked with the bases loaded, Kenny Cox scored Cabbage on a sacrifice fly, Harris singled home a run and Bell doubled in two more runs to make it 32-9.
