Senators advance to TCCAA/Region 7 Championship with 12-3 win over Cleveland State
CHATTANOOGA, TN – No. 1 Walters State scored in all but one inning on Wednesday afternoon in the TCCAA/Region 7 Tournament against Cleveland State, advancing to the Championship with a 12-3 win in seven innings.
With the victory, the Senators improved to 52-6-1 on the season.
At the plate, Kole Fenton led the way with three hits and three RBIs while Jack Torbett had three hits and drove in a run. Tyler Myatt drove home three runs, as well.
On the mound, Gage Peterson (9-2) got the start and threw 4.1 innings. Peterson allowed three runs on six hits and struck out seven. Brady Scott replaced Peterson with an out in the fifth and threw the final 2.2 innings. Scott didn't allow a hit and struck out three.
Cleveland struck first in the game with a run in the top of the opening inning, but Nate Conner tied things in the bottom half with an RBI single that scored Fenton. The Senators took the lead in the second on a fielder's choice that scored Walker Morgan, and then went up 4-1 on two bases-loaded walks in the third.
In the fourth, the scoring continued as Conner scored on a wild pitch and Carson Cabbage flew out but scored Vogele to make it 6-1. Cleveland cut the lead to 6-3 in the fifth, but Walters State broke the game open with six runs in the sixth. Cabbage started the inning off with a single and Morgan walked to put two on. After Torbett singled to load the bases, Fenton singled up the middle to score two runs. A wild pitch and walk loaded the bases back up, and Myatt cleared them all with the three-RBI double that made it 11-2.
Walters State scored one more run in the inning on an RBI single by Cabbage, and Scott shut the door to end the game in seven.
