MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — Walters State turned to its bench for a spark, and Kobe Powell suddenly caught fire.

Powell entered the game and fired in 15 points to help Walters State run past the Maryville College JV 112-73 at 'Z' Buda Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Powell, who missed only one of his six field goal attempts in the first half, went 3-for-3 from long distance in the closing minutes before intermission as his third 3-pointer gave the Senators a commanding 56-30 lead at the break.

"Kobe came in and played very well," Walters State coach Bill Carlyle said. "I thought we were sleepwalking when I put him in. We weren't getting anything done so I said we'll go with somebody else. I thought we finally woke up and played the way we're capable of playing."

Powell was one of two Senators to come off the bench and hit double figures as Demontay Dixon did so as well. Dixon, who buried two 3-pointers in the first half, dropped 11 points.

Paris Taylor went 7-of-13 from the floor and finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Kajuan Hale matched him with 14 points and led the Senators (12-5) with 7 assists.

After Hale converted an and-one for a 73-41 lead, Taylor followed up his floater with a one-hand slam and later added another flush in transition to build Walters State's lead to 94-56.

Miles Thomas led all scorers with 25 points for Walters State as he went 10-of-15 from the field.

After knocking down Walters State's third 3-pointer of the opening half, Thomas drove to the basket and scored to cap a 15-0 run by the Senators which gave them a 39-24 lead.

By halftime, Thomas had already accumulated 15 points as he answered a Maryville basket by going up and under to keep the lead at 15.

Josh Strong knocked down a 3 to extend Maryville's final lead to 14-9 before Walters State countered with eight straight points. Thomas accounted for six of them, hitting a fallaway for the lead before knocking down a pull-up jumper and a fast-break layup.

Preston Tomlinson and David Clark each tied the game with a 3-pointer, the latter pulling the Scots even at 24 before Walters State erupted.

Strong led Maryville with 20 points while David Deacon and Trevor Perry scored 12 apiece.

"We needed a win desperately right now," Carlyle added. "I wish we'd had a couple more (games) just to get the kinks out. You could see we were rusty as everything."

Santana Haney, a Cocke County High School graduate, joined the scoring act in the second half as he buried a 3-pointer for a 100-65 advantage.

And Haney wasn't the only Lakeway Area native to make his way into the scorebook as Morristown West graduate Jamaahl Williams buried a pull-up jumper for a 102-70 lead before driving to the rim for the game's final score.

Walters State hits the road for a pair of Tennessee Community College Athletic Association games this weekend, visiting Volunteer State at 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Motlow State at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
