Thomas, Hale lead Senators past Pioneers, 93-80

GALLATIN, Tenn. Miles Thomas and Kajuan Hale combined for 53 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists and 4 steals Friday night as Walters State rang up a 93-80 victory over Volunteer State in a Tennessee Community College Athletic Association contest.

 

Thomas tossed in 31 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, dished out 5 assists and had a steal while Hale added 22 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals as the Senators (13-5, 4-2 TCCAA) erased a 42-39 halftime deficit with a 54-38 showing in the second half to get the road win over the Pioneers (3-10, 1-5 TCCAA).

 

Demontay Dixon and Khiry Shelton both had solid efforts as well for WSCC, as both scored 13 points with Shelton leading the team along with Paris Taylor with 8 rebounds while Dixon grabbed 6 caroms. Taylor added 8 points as well in the win.

 

After trailing by three at halftime, WSCC claimed the lead early in the second half and didn't look back, as the 16-point scoring advantage in the second half allowed the Senators to claim their first road TCCAA win of the year.

 

Walters State shot 52.5 percent (31 of 59) from the field in the contest, making 1 of 4 from deep and 30 of 41 from the charity stripe. The Senators also held a 40-29 edge on the glass.

 

Volunteer State shot 47.7 percent (31 of 65) in the game, making 5 of 19 from beyond the 3-point arc and 13 of 18 at the line. Five Pioneers finished in double figures, led by Jabori Murphy with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Brian Price (14), Tim Goodrich (14), Justin Goodson (11) and George Roberson (10) all had double figures in points.

 

The Senators will travel to Lynchburg Saturday to take on two-time defending TCCAA champion and first place Motlow State (10-6, 6-0 TCCAA) for a 5 p.m. tipoff inside Copperweld Arena.
