Lady Senators drop finale to Lady Cougars

Lady Senators drop finale to Lady Cougars

CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Walters State jumped out to an early lead but watched Cleveland State rally bacon quickly and take control of Sunday's opening game of a scheduled doubleheader to take the game and eventually the series after the fourth and final game of the series was canceled due to lighting after four innings.

The Lady Cougars scored four runs in the first inning and three more in the third while holding the Lady Senators scoreless over the final six frames to grab a 7-2 victory. Walters State appeared heading towards a win in the finale and a series split, but a lightning delay after the fourth inning turned into a lengthy delay, with the game being called more than two hours after it was stopped with WSCC leading 9-4. Since the game did not complete five innings, it was ruled a no-contest, giving Cleveland State the series win.

With the victory, the Lady Cougars improved to 14-16 on the year and 7-12 in Tennessee Community College Athletic Association play. The loss dropped the Lady Senators to 22-15 on the year an 14-7 in league action.

Walters State managed just three hits in the loss, with Sydney Fox and Kallyn Newport both ripping a double and Sydney Dukes adding a single in the contest. The two runs for the Lady Senators came in the top of the first, as Dukes singled and moved to second when Keeley Quillen was hit by a pitch. Newport followed with a two-out, two-run double for a 2-0 lead.

Cleveland State scored four runs off losing pitcher Lauren Brickey, who allowed five hits in 1 1/3 innings less than 24 hours after tossing a no-hit shutout on Saturday. Delilah Malczewski came on in relief and worked 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits.

The Lady Senators will be back in action at home for six games this week, beginning with a doubleheader against Snead State on Wednesday before facing Dyersburg State for a four-game TCCAA series this weekend on Friday and Saturday.
