Lady Senators split Saturday doubleheader at Chattanooga State

CHATTANGOOGA, Tenn.— It wasn't the start the Walters State softball team was looking for as they dropped their opening game, 12-4, to Chattanooga State Saturday at Frost Stadium. The Lady Senators made up for it with their second chance, dominating the Lady Tigers 10-4 in Game Two.

The victory in the nightcap halts a five-game skid for WSCC (8-6, 1-3 TCCAA).

Game Two saw Walters State put 10 hits on the board as Kailyn Newport led the way with a 2-for-5, three RBI day. Jenica Brown and Sydney Fox both finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, Olivia Wheeler was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Kelci Contrell picked up an RBI as a pinch hitter.

Morgan Riffle took the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with eight hits, four runs, a walk and three strikeouts.

The opening game of the day was a quick one as the Lady Senators surrendered 10 runs in the first inning to all but ensure the game would end on the mercy rule after five innings.

Kenna Kap (4-3) took the loss, pitching one inning with eight hits, 10 runs and two walks. Alexis Duff finished out the game with five hits, two runs and one walk in four innings' work.

WSCC threatened in every inning with baserunners on, but could only plate four in spite of racking up nine hits in just five innings. Fox picked up her first RBI of the day, going 1-for-3. Sydney Dukes finished 2-of-3 with an RBI. Macey Hefner was 2-for-2 with a run scored and Hanna Taylor finished 2-for-3. Santanna Hall was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
