Coffman no-hitter, Campbell home runs lead No. 7 Walters State to two wins over Motlow State

MORRISTOWN, TN – Thanks to a Tori Coffman no-hitter in game one and a home run in each game by Haidyn Campbell, No. 7 Walters State swept a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon against Motlow State. The Lady Senators won 8-0 in game one and took a 12-3 win in game two.

 

With the sweep, the Lady Senators improved to 15-1 overall and 6-0 in TCCAA play. 

 

"We came out and swung the bats and scored a bunch of runs," Walters State coach Larry Sauceman said. "We played good defense, as well. That's two good conference wins. We have to come back out and do it again tomorrow." 

 

GAME ONE: No. 7 Walters State 8, Motlow State 0 (5 Innings)

 

In game one, Coffman (10-0) struck out 11 in five innings of work and didn't allow a hit.

 

Coffman's 11 strikeouts put her at 101 for the season in just 11 appearances and 53.1 innings of work. She's allowed just five runs all season. Her career record at Walters State improved to 42-1 with Thursday's win.

 

At the plate, Campbell had two hits, a two-run homer and three RBI. Along with Campbell, Kailey Dixon drove in two runs while Nora Mack had two hits and an RBI. 

 

Following a scoreless first inning, Walters State broke things open with five runs in the bottom of the second. Abigail Taylor started things off with an RBI single, and Dixon made it 3-0 with a two-RBI double. Mack was the next batter, and she doubled Dixon home to make it 4-0. The final run of the inning came on an RBI single by Campbell.

 

The Lady Senators got a run in the bottom of the third on an error that scored Imari Golden, and the final two runs came on a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth by Campbell.

 

GAME TWO: No. 7 Walters State 12, Motlow State 3 (5 Innings)

 

In game two, Motlow struck early with a three-run homer in the top of the first. However, Hayley Lawing settled down in the circle and her offense scored 12 runs to end it in five innings. 

 

Lawing picked up her fifth win of the season, throwing four innings and allowing three runs on three hits. Lawing did not allow a hit after the home run in the first.

 

Makayla Ramsey replaced Lawing in the fifth and got the final three outs of the game. 

 

At the plate, Campbell hit a grand slam while Jules Johnson hit her second home run of the season. Dixon had another two-RBI double and a sacrifice fly that scored a run, while Taylor drove in two runs. 

 

Following the Motlow home run, Walters State got one of the runs back in the bottom of the first on a Brooklyn Copley RBI single. Then, in the second, the Lady Senators scored eight runs to take a 9-3 lead. Those runs came on a Dixon sacrifice fly, Campbell's grand slam, a Johnson two-run homer and an RBI single by Taylor. 

 

The final three runs for Walters State came in the fourth inning, as Taylor singled home a run and Dixon smacked a two-RBI double to make it 12-3.

Walters State will be back in action on Friday for two more games against Motlow State. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
