No. 8 Walters State falls to Dyersburg State in TCCAA/Region VII Tournament

COLUMBIA, TN – In a game that spanned over the course of two days, top-seeded Walters State fell 5-1 to third-seeded Dyersburg State on Wednesday to close out their time in the TCCAA/Region VII Tournament.

The game started on Tuesday and went six innings, before weather postponed the remainder of the contest. The Lady Senators and Dyersburg played the final inning on Wednesday. 

With the loss, the Lady Senators fell to 43-9 on the season. The eighth-ranked Lady Senators now await to see if they are one of four teams selected as at-large bids for the NJCAA DI World Series. Those selections will be announced on Tuesday. 

At the plate against Dyersburg, Brooklyn Copley hit a solo home run and had two hits, while Alex Blanton, Kailey Dixon and Abigail Taylor had the other three hits for the Lady Senators. 

In the circle, Tori Coffman pitched six innings on Tuesday. Coffman gave up four runs, two earned, on four hits and struck out six. Makayla Ramsey pitched Wednesday's seventh-inning, allowing one run on two hits while striking out one. 

Dyersburg got on the board first with a two-run homer in the top of the second, but Walters State cut the lead in half in the fourth on a Copley solo home run.

However, Dyersburg scored two more times in the fifth and once in the seventh to make it 5-1. Walters State had their chances but left two on in the sixth and one on in the seventh. 

The Lady Senators end their TCCAA/Region VII Tournament run after finishing as Regular Season Co-Conference Champions. Walters State ranks fifth in the country in team ERA at 1.16 and are in the top-20 in strikeouts (327) and K/7 (7.13). Offensively, the Lady Senators rank 18th in the country in batting average at .374, 20th in OBP at .444 and are in the top-25 in home runs with 67 and slugging percentage at .595. 

Individually, Tori Coffman is sixth in the country with a 0.93 ERA. Coffman is seventh in the country in strikeouts with 243, despite missing a month of the season. Offensively, Kailey Dixon is in the top-30 in batting average at .483. Brooklyn Copley is 19th in the country in home runs with 19, and Jules Johnson is in the top-30 with 17 homers. 

The Lady Senators went 18-2 on the road and 7-2 in neutral site games.
