Lady Senators open conference play with win over Dyersburg State

DYERSBURG, TN – A 19-5 third quarter was enough for No. 22 Walters State on Saturday in their TCCAA opener as they took down Dyersburg State, 44-31.

 

With the win, Walters State moved to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.

 

The defense led the charge for Walters State as Dyersburg scored single digits in three quarters. Dyersburg shot just 32.4% from the field and Walters State forced 18 turnovers. 

 

On the offensive side for the Lady Senators, Tyasia Reed led the way with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists. Asia Barr came off the bench and provided a spark for Walters State with nine points and two steals. 

 

Other scorers for Walters State included Rose Morrow with six points and four rebounds and Briontanay Marshall, Maiya Reed, Kailyn Farrell and Izarria Alexander each with four points. Reed had four assists and three rebounds while Alexander had eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks. 

 

It was a slower start for Walters State but the defense kept them in it. The Lady Senators tied the game at five with 5:15 to go in the first when Morrow made a layup and an Alexander layup gave them a 7-5 lead.

 

Morrow added a layup after that and Marshall made a jumper to make it 11-5. Walters State finished the quarter with a made layup by Barr and one by Tyasia Reed to make it 15-6.

 

In the second quarter, Dyersburg fought their way back into it and cut the lead to 19-18 midway through before taking the lead with 2:57 to go. The Lady Senators scored just six points in the quarter but a Barr jumper with 33 seconds left gave them a 21-20 lead at the half. 

 

Walters State wasted little time to start the second half as Tyasia Reed hit two free throws, Alexander made a layup and Tyasia Reed hit a 3-pointer to make it 28-20. The lead grew to 11 following a Barr 3-pointer before the Lady Senators scored six points to end the quarter, leading 40-25. 

 

The fourth quarter was a stalemate as the teams combined for 10 points. The points from Walters State came from Maiya Reed who had four points.

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to take on Cleveland State. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
