Lady Senators pick up road win over Spartanburg Methodist

SPARTANBURG, SC – Walters State picked up their third straight win on Monday afternoon as they took care of Spartanburg Methodist, 66-52.

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 9-2 on the season. The loss was just Spartanburg Methodist's second of the season. 

 

The Lady Senators were led in the game by Kailyn Farrell with 17 points on 6-9 shooting. Farrell added nine rebounds and three assists and was 5-6 from the free throw line. 

 

Along with Farrell, Tyasia Reed added 13 points and five rebounds while Rose Morrow had 10 points on 5-6 shooting. Other scorers were Maiya Reed with nine, Izarria Alexander with eight, Asia Barr with five and Juilenne Ongbagnamen with four.

 

Maiya Reed led the team with five assists and had five rebounds, as well. The Lady Senators shot 49.1% from the field and were 9-10 from the free throw line. 

 

Morrow started things off for the Lady Senators with a bucket and Alexander made it 4-0. Spartanburg tied the game a minute later and took an 8-4 lead before Maiya Reed had a layup and Tyasia Reed drilled a 3-pointer to give Walters State a 9-8 advantage. 

 

The two teams traded the lead from there until Spartanburg Methodist went up 15-12. However, Ongbagnamen scored and Barr made a 3-pointer to give Walters State the lead again at 17-15. Two Farrell free throws added to the lead and Tyasia Reed and Barr scored in the final minute of the quarter to make it 23-15. 

 

In the second, the scoring slowed down but the Lady Senators held onto the lead 31-29 at the break. Tyasia Reed and Kailyn Farrell both had four points in the second quarter.

 

Walters State came out strong in the third as Farrell scored four straight. Spartanburg cut the lead to three, but Maiya Reed scored five straight to make it 42-34. Spartanburg made one final push in the quarter to make it 46-42, but Alexander scored and Morrow scored four to end the third and give Walters State a 10-point lead. 

 

The fourth quarter was much of the same as the Lady Senators lead never dipped below double digits. Farrell scored six in the final frame as the Lady Senators took the 66-52 victory.

Walters State will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Alabama for the Shelton State Classic. The Lady Senators will play Gadsden State on Friday at 5 p.m. before taking on Shelton State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
