Lady Senators drop final contest of 2022 to Shelton State

TUSCALOOSA, AL – Walters State fell behind early and could never get things going on Saturday afternoon, falling to Shelton State 73-38 at the Shelton State Classic. 

 

With the loss, the Lady Senators go into 2023 with a 10-3 record. 

 

The Lady Senators were led in the game by Aminata Tal with 10 points. Along with Tal, Kailyn Farrell had six points.

 

Other scorers for the Lady Senators were Maiya Reed with five, Tyasia Reed with five, Rose Morrow with five, Asia Barr with three, Izarria Alexander with two and Juilenne Ongbagnamen with two. 

 

It was a slow start for Walters State as Shelton State scored the first 10 points of the game. Farrell finally got the Lady Senators on the board, but Shelton scored six of the next seven points to increase their lead. A Barr 3-pointer with 39 seconds left in the quarter made it 16-6 after one. 

 

In the second, it was a lot of the same as Shelton State led 33-13 at the break. Walters State's points in the quarter came from Tal with three and Maiya Reed and Farrell with two each. 

 

In the third quarter, Morrow led the way for Walters State with five points while Tall added three more. It was 53-23 going to the fourth. 

 

The fourth quarter saw the strongest offensive output by Walters State in the game with 15 points. Tyasia Reed had five while Tal had four.

Walters State will be back in action on Jan.11 as they travel to play Chattanooga State. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
