Reed, Farrell lift Lady Senators over Jackson State

JACKSON, TN – Tyasia Reed and Kailyn Farrell combined for 53 points on Saturday afternoon as Walters State cruised past Jackson State, 105-53.

 

With the win, the Lady Senators improved to 14-3 overall and 9-0 in TCCAA play. 

 

Reed recorded a near triple-double in the game for Walters State with a season-high 32 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Farrell recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 21 points and 12 rebounds. 

 

Reed was 10-16 from the field in the contest, knocked down six 3-pointers and was 6-7 from the charity stripe. Farrell was 8-13 from the field with eight offensive rebounds and had three blocks and two steals. 

 

Along with Reed and Farrell, Izarria Alexander recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Alexander had eight offensive rebounds. 

 

Other contributors for Walters State were Maiya Reed with eight points, five assists and four steals, Rose Morrow with seven points and four rebounds, Matty Tanner with six points and three assists, Ciara Taylor with six points and three rebounds, Aminata Tal with six points and three steals and Asia Barr with five points and four assists. 

 

As a team, the Lady Senators shot 49% from the field and had 43 rebounds and 22 assists. On the defensive side, the Lady Senators had 22 steals and forced 31 turnovers. 

 

It was a strong start for Walters State as they led 24-14 after one quarter. Farrell, Tyasia Reed and Barr each had five points in the opening quarter. 

 

In the second quarter, Walters State totaled 28 more points and held Jackson State to nine as they led 52-23 at the break. Tyasia Reed had 11 points in the quarter, shooting a perfect 4-4 from the field and knocking down three 3-pointers. Alexander added six points while Taylor had four. 

 

Walters State added 26 more points in the third and upped their lead to 78-37 after three. Farrell and Tyasia Reed had six points each in the quarter as the Lady Senators made 11-of-19 shots.

 

The fourth quarter was more of the same as Walters State scored 27 points and held Jackson State to 16 points. Tyasia Reed had 10 points in the final 10 minutes while Farell added eight points and seven offensive rebounds.

Walters State will be back in action next Saturday, Jan. 28, as the Lady Senators host Dyersburg State. Tip is set for 2 p.m., and it is Alumni Day for both the Senators and Lady Senators.
