Lady Senators blow past Jackson State on Sophomore Day

MORRISTOWN, TN – No. 21 Walters State broke out to a 23-point lead after the first quarter on Saturday afternoon and never looked back, taking down Jackson State by a score of 93-43.

 

With the win, the Lady Senators improved to 22-3 on the season and 17-0 in TCCAA play.

 

"I thought we did a really good job early on of making the right pass and it leading to easy baskets," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "Matty Tanner did a really good job for us today not only shooting but with her passing, as well. Overall, I thought we played really well as a team and finished out our home schedule strong."

 

It was also Sophomore Night for the Lady Senators as they recognized six players. Those players were Maiya Reed, Rose Morrow, Tyasia Reed, Matty Tanner, Izarria Alexander and Kailyn Farrell

 

"This sophomore class means a lot to me and the program," Coleman said. "This is a really special group of women, and they have done a great job for us these past two seasons. It has been a joy to get to know them and their families. I am going to miss them." 

 

Farrell was the leading scorer in the game for the Lady Senators, coming off the bench to score 17 points. She also had 12 rebounds and four assists. 

 

Along with Farrell, four others scored double figures for the Lady Senators. Tanner and Alexander each had 14 points while Morrow had 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. Aminata Tal also finished in double figures with 11 points. 

 

Other contributors for the Lady Senators were Maiya Reed with eight points, six rebounds and five assists, Tyasia Reed with seven points and 10 rebounds, Briontanay Marshall with six points and Asia Barr with four points. 

 

As a team, the Lady Senators shot 51% from the field and grabbed 49 rebounds. They also assisted on 27 of their 41 made shots. 

 

Defensively, the Lady Senators held Jackson State to 30% from the field and forced 23 turnovers. 

 

The Lady Senators set the tone to start the game as they scored the first 10 points and led 28-5 after one. Farrell had nine points in the quarter and was a perfect 4-4 while Tanner added eight points. Morrow scored five while Tyasia Reed added four. 

 

Walters State kept the pressure going in the second quarter as they scored 23 more points and held Jackson State to 10. Farrell added six more points, and four rebounds, while Marshall and Alexander each had two points. The Lady Senators shot 67% from the field in the quarter, and it was 51-15 at the break. 

 

In the third, it was once again all Walters State as they led 72-25 going to the final 10 minutes. Tal had six points in the quarter while Barr scored four. Morrow and Tanner each knocked down 3-pointers. 

 

The Lady Senators finished things off strong in the fourth with 21 more points, as they eased to the win. Alexander had nine points in the quarter while Maiya Reed and Morrow each had four.

Walters State will be back in action on Monday as they close out the regular season on the road against Southwest Tennessee. Tip is set for 5 p.m.
