Lady Senators advance to Region VII Championship with win over Roane State

HARRIMAN, TN – No. 19 Walters State scored 26 points in the first quarter on Monday afternoon in the TCCAA/Region VII Semifinals and were off from there, taking a 68-53 win over Roane State. 

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 24-4 on the season and advanced to the Championship game on Tuesday at 2 p.m. 

 

Kailyn Farrell led the way for Walters State with 19 points and seven rebounds. Farrell was 8-11 from the field and also dished out three assists. 

 

Along with Farrell, Tyasia Reed finished with 14 points on 4-5 shooting while Matty Tanner and Asia Barr each knocked down three 3-pointers and finished with nine points.

 

Other contributors for Walters State were Rose Morrow with seven points, four rebounds and three assists, Maiya Reed with three points and five assists, Izarria Alexander with four points, Aminata Tal with two points and two rebounds and Briontanay Marshall with one point. 

 

As a team, the Lady Senators shot 48% from the field and assisted on 21 of 25 made field goals. The Lady Senators made 10 3-pointer and were 8-10 from the charity stripe. 

 

Defensively, the Lady Senators held Roane State to 39% from the field and forced 11 turnovers. 

 

It was a strong start to the game for the Lady Senators as they led 26-13 after one quarter. Tanner knocked in three 3-pointers and had nine points while Farrell added five and Tyasia Reed and Izarria Alexander each had four. Walters State made 11-of-15 shots in the opening 10 minutes. 

 

The second quarter was a slow one for both teams as just 15 points were scored. The Lady Senators scored seven of them, four coming from Farrell and three coming from Barr, and led 33-21 at the break. 

 

In the third quarter, the two teams battled equally as they both scored 17 points. Farrell had six points for the Lady Senators while Morrow knocked down a clutch 3-pointer and had five points. The Lady Senators led 50-38.

 

In the fourth, the Lady Senators knocked down three more 3-pointers and scored 18 more points as they rolled to the win. Tyasia Reed had seven points in the final 10 minutes while Farrell added four. Maiya Reed and Barr each knocked down 3-pointers.

Walters State will be back in action on Tuesday in the TCCAA/Region VII Championship at Roane State. The Lady Senators will take on Chattanooga State at 2 p.m.
