Lady Senators fall on the road to Spartanburg Methodist

SPARTANBURG, SC – Walters State struggled offensively on Saturday afternoon against Spartanburg Methodist and that was enough to do them in, falling 60-49.

 

With the loss, Walters State fell to 3-3 on the season.

 

Leading the way for the Lady Senators were Kristyna Boyd with 16 points and eight rebounds, Kyra Perkins with 15 points and six rebounds and Briontanay Marshall with eight points and 10 rebounds. 

 

Other contributors for Walters State were Lia Wright with five points and six rebounds, Juilenne Ongbagnamen with three points and four rebounds, Emmanuella Amaefula with two points and Asia Barr with six assists and four rebounds. 

 

As a team, Walters State had 44 rebounds to Spartanburg Methodist's 19. The Lady Senators assisted on 15 of 18 made baskets. Defensively, Walters State held Spartanburg Methodist to 36% from the field and forced 15 turnovers. 

 

It was a back-and-forth start to the game as Walters State and Spartanburg Methodist traded the lead five times in the opening 10 minutes. However, Spartanburg Methodist scored the final six points of the quarter and led 15-12 after one. Perkins had five points in the opening quarter for the Lady Senators.

 

In the second, the Lady Senators tied the game early with a three by Wright. Spartanburg Methodist rallied off four straight to go up 19-15, but Wright made a free throw, Boyd scored four straight and Marshall made a jumper that gave Walters State a 22-19 advantage. From there, the two teams traded the lead before Amaefula broke the 26-26 tie with a jumper. Boyd then hit two free throws with no time on the clock to give Walters State a 30-26 halftime lead.

 

However, Walters State struggled from there as they scored just nine points in the third quarter. Spartanburg Methodist scored 17 and led 43-39. Boyd had eight of Walters State's nine points in the quarter.

 

In the fourth, Walters State managed just 10 points while Spartanburg Methodist scored 17 more and took the 60-49 win. Perkins had eight points in the final 10 minutes.

Walters State will be back in action on Monday as they travel to take on Concord University JV. Tip is set for 5 p.m.
