HARRIMAN, TN – Walters State held Roane State to six points in the first quarter on Wednesday evening and that early lead was enough, taking a 57-53 win.

With the win, the Lady Senators improved to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in TCCAA play.

Kyra Perkins led the way for Walters State in the game with 14 points, while Kristyna Boyd had 11 and Tianna Rhodes came off the bench for 10 big points.

Other scorers for the Lady Senators included Asia Barr with eight, Briontanay Marshall with six, Juilenne Ongbagnamen with three, Lia Wright with three and Janae Charles with two. 

Needed a quick start after a slow one on Monday, the Lady Senators did just that as they scored 15 points and held Roane State to two made field goals and six points. Roane State actually led 6-5, but Walters State used their Top-5 defense in the country to hold them scoreless for the final six minutes and scored 10 points of their one. 

Boyd had five points in the opening 10 minutes, while Marshall had four and Perkins hit a 3-pointer. 

In the second quarter, the Lady Senators continued to play strong defense and scored 14 more points to take a 29-17 lead into the break. Perkins hit another three and had five points in the quarter, while Rhodes added four and Wright hit a three. 

The third quarter was a lot of the same for the Lady Senators as they held their 12-point halftime lead and led 45-33 going to the fourth. Six players scored for Walters State in the third, as Boyd and Rhodes had four each and Ongbagnamen knocked in a three. 

In the fourth, the Lady Senators bent but didn't break as they held on for the win. Barr and Perkins each had four points in the final 10 minutes of the game.

Walters State will be back in action on Saturday, hosting Jackson State. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
