Marshall records double-double in Lady Senators win over Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, TN – Briontanay Marshall tallied 15 points and 15 rebounds for Walters State on Wednesday evening, as the Lady Senators cruised to a 66-29 victory over Cleveland State.

 

With the win, Walters State improved to 12-6 overall and 9-2 in TCCAA play. The Lady Senators have now won five games in-a-row. 

 

Marshall was consistent throughout the game, with four points in the first, two in the second, two in the third and seven in the fourth. She had five rebounds in both the first and fourth quarters.

 

Along with Marshall, Kyra Perkins led the team with 21 points to go with seven rebounds. Asia Barr also had 18 points. Other contributors for Walters State were Kristyna Boyd with seven points and eight rebounds, Juilenne Ongbagnamen with two points and four rebounds, Janae Charles with two points and four rebounds and Tianna Rhodes with one point and three rebounds. 

 

As a team, Walters State was 22-61 from the field and hit seven 3-pointers. The Lady Senators had 53 rebounds. 

 

Defensively, Walters State held a second straight opponent without a 3-pointer. Cleveland State made just 12 shots and had 28 turnovers. 

 

The Lady Senators got things going with 25 points in the first quarter to break out to a 25-12 lead. Perkins had 15 of those points, draining three 3-pointers and knocking down all four free throws she attempted. Barr had five points, as well.

 

In the second, the defense took over as Walters State held Cleveland to just four points. The Lady Senators scored 17 of their own, eight from Marshall, and led 42-16 at the break. 

 

The third quarter was a low-scoring affair, as Walters State scored nine points to Cleveland's eight. It was 51-24 going to the fourth. 

 

In the fourth, Walters State outscored Cleveland State 15-5 on their way to the win. Marshall had seven points and five rebounds, while Boyd had five points and eight rebounds.
