Lady Senators continue great stretch of play with 89-38 win over Southwest Tennessee

MORRISTOWN, TN – The nations leaders in fewest points allowed per game were at it again on Saturday afternoon.

Taking on Southwest Tennessee, Walters State allowed just 38 points and didn't allow over 11 points in a quarter. Meanwhile, the Lady Senators scored their highest point total of the season in an 89-38 win.

With the win, Walters State improved to 15-6 overall and 12-2 in TCCAA play. The Lady Senators have now won their last eight games.

"I thought we were really good all the way around today," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "We started really strong and just kept it going. Kyra did a good job offensively in the first half. And Asia was very good in the second half for us. All in all, we played a really solid game."

Asia Barr led the way for Walters State in the game with 26 points, 18 of them coming in the second half. Barr hit six 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes.

Also having a monster day in the scoring column was Kyra Perkins. Perkins had 18 in the first half and finished the game with 25 points.

Other scorers for Walters State were Kristyna Boyd with 14 points, Briontanay Marshall with nine points, Janae Charles with six points, Tianna Rhodes with four points, Emmanuella Amaefula with two points, Lia Wright with two points and Juilenne Ongbagnamen with one point.

The Lady Senators came into the game first in the nation in fewest points allowed per game at 46, and that plummeted on Saturday.

It was a back-and-forth start to the game, with Walters State leading 10-8 with two minutes to go in the opening quarter. However, the Lady Senators closed strong as Barr scored twice and Perkins hit two free throws to give the Lady Senators a 19-8 lead after one.

In the second, the Lady Senators continued their run as Perkins scored again and Marshall scored. Southwest broke the drought with two baskets and then cut the lead to 28-14, but Walters State answered as Boyd hit a free throw and Perkins scored five straight. Perkins hit one more three in the half, while Boyd scored twice and it was 41-19 at the break.

Walters State came out on fire in the third quarter, as Boyd scored, Ongbagnamen hit a free throw, Marshall scored and Amaefula scored to make it 48-19. That was when Barr began to make her mark, knocking in three straight 3-pointers.

The Lady Senators scored 25 points in the third quarter and led 66-19.

In the fourth, Barr hit three more 3-pointers, while Perkins scored seven. As a team, Walters State scored 23 more points and cruised to the win.
