TUSCALOOSA, AL – Walters State dropped a 67-50 contest to No. 7 Shelton State on Sunday evening.
With the loss, the Lady Senators fell to 8-4 overall.
"Shelton was tougher than us today," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "We were able to hold their top scorers under their average but allowed another to have her career night. We will take this weekend and build on it when we open back up in 2025."
Leading the way for Walters State was Terryauna Griffin with 17 points, while Kyra Perkins added 10. Other scorers were Alexis Hood with eight, Jahliya McDonald with four, Raegan Starks with four, Nyjah Gibbs with four, Anaya Mulholland-Natt with two and Morgan Williams with one.
The first quarter was competitive throughout, as Walters State led 8-4 early thanks to six points from Griffin and two from Hood. Shelton State scored four straight to tie the game, but Perkins scored to give the Lady Senators the lead back.
However, Shelton State scored six straight to make it 16-10. The lead was 17-12 with a minute left, but Griffin scored one final time to cut it to 17-14 after one.
In the second, Walters State struggled to get the offense going as they trailed 32-20 at the break. Hood had four points in the quarter, while McDonald scored the other two.
The third quarter was more of the same, as Shelton outscored the Lady Senators 19-10. Griffin had six in the quarter, while Perkins and Gibbs each had two points.
In the fourth, Walters State cut the lead to 13 but could get no further. Perkins had six in the final 10 minutes to lead the way, while Griffin had five. McDonald, Hood, Starks and Mulholland-Natt each had two points, as well.
