No. 15 Walters State sweeps Roane State on the road

HARRIMAN, TN – No. 15 Walters State picked up their 20th win of the season on Tuesday evening, sweeping Roane State 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-22).

With the victory, the Lady Senators improved to 20-4 overall and 6-0 in TCCAA play. Tuesday's win was Walters State's 12th straight TCCAA regular season victory, dating back to last season.

"It's always good to get a conference sweep on the road," Walters State coach Megan Blaylock said. "I thought we played well, for the most part. We still need to work on finishing out matches better, but I was pleased with the way we played."

Roane State led early in the opening set, but Lauren Mims tied things at five with a kill. The two teams remained tied at six and seven, before Walters State scored five straight to take control. During that stretch, Catherine Sweeney had a kill and block, Alyssa Campbell had a kill, Rylee Haynie had a block and Payton Brown recorded an ace.

The lead would hover around three after that run, as Haynie recorded another block and Campbell a kill to keep the momentum. Roane State made one last push and tied the set at 17, but the Lady Senators scored six of the next seven points. At 24-20, Haynie blocked a shot that gave Walters State the opening set.

In set two, Roane State once again led early before Walters State tied things at five, seven, eight, nine, 10 and 11. The Raiders grabbed a small lead at 14-12, but Campbell had a kill and block in back-to-back points that tied the set again.

Walters State then grabbed a two-point lead on a kill by Mims. Roane State tied the set one more time at 19-19, but Haynie had a kill, Olivia Brown had a kill and Mims had back-to-back kills that ended the set at 25-20 in favor of the Lady Senators.

In the final set, the Lady Senators quickly broke out to an 8-2 lead as Mims had two kills, Haynie had a kill and block and Veda Barton recorded a kill. Roane State tied the set at 10 and 11, before taking the lead 14-11. Walters State broke the run with two kills from Haynie, but Roane State scored two more right back to go up 16-13.

Needing a spark, Walters State got one and rallied off three straight points that tied the set again. Sydney Bjornstad gave the Lady Senators the lead at 17-16 with an ace, but Roane State tied things at 18 and 21. Barton quickly gave Walters State the lead back with a block, before a block by Mims and kill by Finley Surber ended the set and match.
