CHATTANOOGA, TN – No. 8 Walters State opened conference play on Sunday afternoon in Chattanooga, splitting a doubleheader with Chattanooga State. The Senators won game one 4-2 before falling 4-0 in game two.

With the split, Walters State now stands at 6-1 on the season and are 1-1 in conference play.

It was a strong start to the day for the Senators as they got a great pitching performance from Hayden Summers that led them to victory.

Summers is now 3-0 on the season after starting game one Sunday and going six innings. Summers allowed one run on four hits and struck out seven. Summers has thrown 12 innings so far this season and has an ERA of just 0.75.

Offensively, the Senators were led by Matthew Ellis and Cam Fisher who each knocked in two runs. Caleb McNeely led the Senators with two hits.

After two scoreless innings to start, Ellis finally broke through in the top of the third. After the Senators loaded the bases, Ellis singled in two runs to make it 2-0.

Walters State held onto that lead and increased it in the top of the fifth. With the bases loaded again, Fisher doubled, scoring Ellis and Silas Butler to make it 4-0.

From there, the Senators were able to hold off the Tigers. After Summers, Peyton Calitri came in and pitched to two batters before Nathan Hickman relieved him and shut the door in the seventh inning with the winning run at the plate for his first save of the season.

Unfortunately for Walters State, the offense did not carry over into game two as they were no-hit by the Tigers Cam Hansen.

Kohl Drake got the start for the Senators on the mound in game two, lasting 3.2 innings and allowing two runs on two hits. Drake also struck out six.

After Drake, Jake Knapp came in and pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs on three hits. Nathan Morris replaced Knapp in the fifth and threw a scoreless inning, striking out two, before Blake Cooper and Brayden Matthews pitched a clean sixth inning.

The Senators had a chance early in the game to put up some runs after Fisher and Alberto Osuna each reached on errors to start the top of the second. But the Senators could do nothing with it and failed to threaten again.
