No. 8 Walters State combines for 39 runs to sweep King University JV

BRISTOL, TN – No. 8 Walters State's offense heated up on Tuesday afternoon against King University JV as the Senators swept a doubleheader. Walters State won game one 14-3 and game two 25-7 in five innings.  

With the wins, Walters State improves to 8-1 on the season.  

 

WALTERS STATE 14, KING UNIVERSITY JV 3 

The Senators came out swinging in game one, recording 13 hits. Walters State scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back. 

Jerry Hammons, Alberto Osuna and Lukas Cook each had two hits in the game while Hammons knocked in four runs. Cook, Corbin Shaw and Skyler Cannady all drove home two runs apiece.  

Shaw got the scoring going for Walters State in the first inning with a bases loaded walk. Matthew Ellis would come around to score next on a passed ball before a Cook sacrifice fly scored Osuna. Shaw completed the scoring in the first inning on a double steal and it was 4-0. 

Walters State added a run in the third when Andrew Ott singled home Cook and then broke the game open with six runs in the fifth. Shaw doubled home a run, Cook singled home Shaw, Cannady singled home two runs and Hammons doubled two runs in. 

Hammons doubled two more runs in again in the seventh to make it 13-3 before an Osuna single that scored Hammons finished off the offensive outburst.  

Hudson Ross got the start on the mound and collected his first win of the season. Ross threw two innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out three. After Jacquez Gillespie-Taylor faced four batter, Drew Honeycut replaced him on the mound and threw two scoreless innings, striking out three.  

Walters State concluded the game with Robbie Yates pitching a scoreless fifth and Peyton Calitri throwing two scoreless innings.  

 

WALTERS STATE 25, KING UNIVERSITY JV 7 

Game two saw even more offense from the Senators as they totaled 18 hits. Walters State scored four in the first, five in the second, 10 in the third and six in the fourth.  

Noah Gent led the Senators going 5-5 with four RBIs and scored five runs. Not to be outdone, Nick Block had three hits and five RBIs while Cam Fisher, Matthew Ellis and Silas Butler each knocked in three runs.  

Gent got the scoring going in the game with an RBI single in the first and Block scored two more on a single. A wild pitch scored Logan Harbin to make it 4-0.  

King would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning, but the Senators were at it again in the top of the second when Fisher singled in Caleb McNeely and Ellis blasted a two-run home run. Two runs then scored on an error and it was 9-4.  

Ellis hit his second home run of the game just an inning later in the third, a solo shot, and then Block and Declan Wiesner both singled in two runs. Wiesner then scored on an error before Osuna singled home a run and Gent tripled home two and scored on a wild pitch.  

In the fourth, the onslaught continued as Fisher doubled home two more runs, Shaw and Gent singled home runs, Ott doubled in a run and Block singled home Ott for their 25th run.  

Tim Cao got the start on the mound for the Senators, but it was Matt Dailey who would pick up the win, his first of the season. Dailey threw 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out two. After Dailey, Blake Cooper, Brayden Matthews and Joey Mitchell closed the game out, each throwing an inning.  

 

UP NEXT: 

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday, taking on Cleveland State in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
