Walters State win 10 in a row, sweeps Volunteer State in doubleheader

MORRISTOWN, TN — The wins are beginning to rack up for No. 4 Walters State after Saturday's doubleheader sweep against Volunteer State.

 

The Senators added a consecutive ninth and 10th win to their overall record of 16-1 now, while remaining 7-1 in conference play, after beating Volunteer State 10-2 in the first game and beating them 6-1 in the second game.

 

It won't be long before Walters State sees this Volunteer State team for another doubleheader as they face off again next week on Mar. 10. For now, the Senators are riding with confidence after Saturday's wins. 

 

No. 4 Walters State 10, Volunteer State 2

 

The Senators used a strong first and second inning to get by Volunteer State in game one on Saturday as they scored eight runs to open up.

 

Hayden Summers and Matt Dailey each pitched three innings apiece. Summers left the game with four strikeouts and improved his record to a perfect 5-0 for the season. Dailey threw five strikeouts and did not allow a single run against Volunteer State.

 

The 10 runs for the Senators came from the 12 hits at-bat where Caleb McNeely had the hot bat for the day. McNeely managed two doubles and a home run for the day.

 

Jerry Hammons executed the 5-0 start after his home run which brought in two runners. 

 

Alberto Osuna widened the gap with his two-run homer shortly after Hammons smashed his. Osuna's hit gave the Senators a 7-0 advantage in the second inning.

 

Walters State scored three more runs by the fifth inning and from there used pitching to close out the contest. 

 

No. 4 Walters State 6, Volunteer State 1

 

After starting off hot from the first inning in the first game between Walters State and Volunteer State, the second game opened up in the last three innings.

 

The Senators managed a four-run fifth inning to get the runs started and added a run in the sixth and seventh inning to secure their win. 

 

Kohl Drake pitched roughly over five innings, only allowing one hit and a single run. He threw 10 strikeouts and improved his record to 2-1.

 

McNeely continued to find his sweet spot in game two as he hit a single to bring a runner home in the fifth inning to give Walters State a 2-0 push.

 

Cam Fisher and Alex Balisteri executed two hits each as they both brought in a runner apiece in the final two innings.

 

Fisher's double capped things off in the top of the seventh as the Senators closed the bottom half of the inning for the win.
