No. 3 Walters State run-rules previously unbeaten No. 19 Dyersburg State

HENDERSONVILLE, TN – Walters State was named the No. 3 ranked team in the NJCAA on Monday and against No. 19 Dyersburg State, they showed why. 

The Senators scored runs in all but one inning against the Eagles as the offense continued to stay hot on their way to an 18-7 victory.  

With the victory, Walters State moves to 17-1 on the season. They are on an 11-game winning streak. The loss was Dyersburg's first of the season.  

Walters State was led in the game by Cam Fisher with three hits and four RBIs. Alberto Osuna and Andrew Ott each had two hits while Matthew Ellis drove in three runs.  

Walters State set the tone early against the Eagles, scoring two runs in the first inning as Fisher doubled home Jerry Hammons and Ellis.  

Dyersburg tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, but the Senators added one in the second on a passed ball and then five in the third.  

The scoring in the third started when Ellis scored on a wild pitch. Then, Fisher doubled home a run before Lukas Cook doubled in Fisher to make it 6-2. Ott singled home a run before the scoring concluded when Hammons was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  

In the fifth, the Senators padded their lead when Silas Butler scored on an error. Ellis then scored McNeely before Osuna singled home Hammons to make it 11-3. Osuna leads the NJCAA in RBIs with 37 on the season.   

The Senators concluded their scoring with five in the sixth and two in the seventh. In the sixth, Hammons started the scoring by singling home Butler. Then, after Osuna reached on an error that scored McNeely and Hammons scored on a wild pitch, Fisher singled home two runs that made it 16-6. In the seventh, Ellis doubled home two more.  

On the mound, Jake Knapp got the start, throwing 4.1 innings. Knapp allowed three earned runs, six total, on six hits. He also struck out four.  

With one out in the fifth, Nathan Hickman replaced Knapp and closed the game out. Hickman threw 2.2 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out six.  

UP NEXT:  

Walters State will be back in action on Wednesday, travelling to take on Volunteer State. The first game for the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
