Hammons leads No. 3 Walters State to sweep of Vol State

GALLATIN, TN – After taking on Vol State on Saturday, No. 3 Walters State made the trip back to Gallatin on Wednesday afternoon and did exactly what they did over the weekend.  

The Senators broke out early in game one for a 15-3 win and then completed the sweep in game two with a 13-8 victory.  

Walters State improved to 19-1 on the year with the sweep. The Senators were led in the games by Jerry Hammons who hit three home runs and knocked in six runs.  

No. 3 WALTERS STATE 15, VOL STATE 3 

It was an offensive outburst per usual in game one for Walters State as they totaled 15 runs on 11 hits.  

The Senators were led by Hammons with his three hits and three RBIs. Andrew Ott had four RBIS, all from a grand slam he hit in the seventh inning. Nick Block and Lukas Cook each drove home two runs as well.  

On the mound, Andrew Romanoli picked up his third win of the season, throwing three innings while allowing one earned run on three hits. Joey Mitchell replaced Romanoli in the fourth and threw two scoreless innings before Hudson Ross and Blake Cooper finished the game off.  

The scoring started for the Senators in the first when Ott scored on a wild pitch. Then, Walters State made it 3-0 in the second when Skylar Cannady doubled home Cook and Dalton McLain followed that up with a single that scored Cannady.  

In the third, the scoring continued when Alberto Osuna added to his NJCAA leading RBI total, singled home Hammons. Hammons then hit his first home run of the day in the fourth to make it 5-1 and then the Senators broke it open in the fifth when Cook and Hammons both hit two-run homers.  

Ott answered the bell in the top of the seventh with his grand slam and then Block finished off the scoring, knocking home Declan Wiesner on a fielders choice. 

No. 3 WALTERS STATE 13, VOL STATE 8 

The Senators continued to put up runs in game two, picking up their pitching staff who struggled throughout the contest.  

The Senators were led by Hammons and Osuna who had three hits apiece while Hammons had three RBIs and Osuna had two. Caleb McNeely also had three hits in the contest.  

The scoring started in the first once again for Walters State as McNeely scored on a wild pitch. Then, Noah Gent singled home Osuna. Fisher concluded the scoring in the first, crossing the plate on a wild pitch.  

In the second, Walters State added three more runs as Hammons hit his third home run of the game, a three-run bomb to make it 6-0. Alex Balisteri would add another run in the third on a home run as well.  

The scoring picked back up for Walters State in the fifth with three runs as McNeely singled home a run, Balisteri scored on a wild pitch and Matthew Ellis drove home a run.  

The sixth saw Walters State score one more, a sacrifice fly by Corbin Shaw, and two more in the seventh on a Osuna single. 

On the mound, Nolan Letzgus got the start, picking up his fourth win of the season. Letzgus pitched three innings, allowing one run on one hit. Brayden Matthew replaced him in the fourth with three innings of his own before Nathan Morris, Drew Honeycutt and Matt Dailey closed the game out. 

UP NEXT: 

Walters State will be back in action on Saturday, taking on Chattanooga State. The doubleheader is set for noon. In the first meeting, the two teams split a doubleheader.
