Fisher's three home run day powers Senators to sweep of Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, TN -- Another day, another sweep for the No. 2 Walters State baseball team.

Taking on Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon, the Senators scored 24 runs on the day as they cruised to a sweep of the Cougars, 11-4 and 13-7.

With the sweep, Walters State improves to 42-2 on the season and 25-1 in TCCAA play.

Cam Fisher led the way for Walters State as he homered three times, once in game one and twice in game two. He also had six RBIs.

In game one, Walters State took advantage of 11 hits as they scored 11 runs and held Cleveland State to just four runs on 10 hits.

At the plate, Jerry Hammons and Fisher led the way with two hits apiece. Both also hit home runs in the contest.

Along with those two, Nick Block, Caleb McNeely and Alberto Osuna each hit home runs as well.

The scoring started early for Walters State with four runs in the top of the first. After Hammons and Matthew Ellis reached base to start the game, Osuna drove them in with a three-run bomb. The next batter was Fisher and he made it 4-0 when he blasted a ball over the fence.

Hammons got in on the fun in the top of the second with a two-run home run before Silas Butler knocked in the teams seventh run with a sacrifice fly.

In the sixth, after Cleveland State closed the gap to 7-4, Walters State put them away for good. First, it was McNeely as he unloaded on a ball for a solo home run. After Osuna scored on a wild pitch, Block capped the scoring off with a pinch hit two-run home run.

Andrew Romanoli got the start on the mound for Walters State and upped his record to 8-0 with the win. Romanoli threw five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out two. Joey Mitchell finished it off with two scoreless innings. He struck out four.

In game two, the offense continued its outburst with 11 hits once again.

It was Fisher, Osuna and Hammons again leading the way as they all hit home runs. Hammons had three hits while Osuna and Fisher had two each. Fisher's hits were both home runs.

It was Cleveland State who got on the board first as they took a 1-0 lead after one. However, Fisher quickly changed that in the second with a two-run bomb.

Then, in the third, it was Fisher again as this time he laced a three-run home run over the fence to give Walters State a 5-1 lead. McNeely followed that up in the fourth with a two RBI double before a wild pitch scored him and made it 8-1.

In the sixth, Ellis knocked in his first run of the day with a single before Osuna dropped the hammer with another three-run home run. A Hammons solo shot in the eighth capped off the scoring for the Senators.

On the mound, it was Jake Knapp who got the start for Walters State. Knapp bounced back from his rough outing on Tuesday with five solid innings that allowed him to improve his record to 6-1. Knapp struck out seven while allowing just one earned run.

Nathan Hickman replaced Knapp in the sixth and picked up his fourth save of the season with four innings of work. He struck out six.
