No. 2 Walters State passes 50 wins with sweep of BCA Post Grad

MORRISTOWN, TN – No. 2 Walters State capped off their final regular season games at home on Monday with a sweep of BCA Post Grad, winning 13-3 in game one and 10-0 in game two.

With the sweep, Walters State moves to 51-3 on the season and finishes the regular season with a perfect 22-0 record at home.

Walters State was led in the both games by their pitching as Peyton Calitri, Matt Dailey and Jacquez Gillespie-Taylor each shut down the Athletics.

"I thought that Dailey and Calitri gave us good starts on the mound," Walters State coach Dave Shelton said. "That's what you have to have in these midweek games, just go out and throw strikes. Most of the time we got in trouble this year it's when we haven't thrown strikes. So it was good to see us do that today."

The Senators let BCA hang around for a bit in game one but used a six-run fifth inning to pull away.

At the plate, Caleb McNeely led the way with three hits, one being a triple, and knocked in three runs.

Along with McNeely, Corbin Shaw produced big numbers for Walters State. Shaw was 2-2 in the contest with a double and a long three-run home run.

Shaw, who has made 18 appearances this year, proved on Monday that he can be a huge asset off the bench for Shelton come postseason play.

"Corbin gives us a good right handed bat off the bench if needed," Shelton said. "Corbin has kind of been stuck because his main position is first base which is also the main position of Alberto Osuna who has national player of the year type numbers. It's been tough for him getting at-bats, but when I have put him in there he has done a great job. We know he can hit."

Silas Butler also knocked in three runs in the contest as well as hitting a home run while Cam Fisher and Alberto Osuna drove home two.

Shaw got the scoring going in the game in the second inning. With two men on, Shaw blasted a ball over the fence in left for his fourth home run of the season.

BCA would come back with two runs of their own in the third, but Walters State would get those two runs back in the fourth. McNeely started the scoring when he reached on an error that scored Shaw. Osuna made it 5-2 a few batters later with an RBI double that scored McNeely.

Butler got the big inning going for Walters State in the fifth with a three-run home run. Osuna would then score McNeely on a sacrifice fly before Fisher knocked his 12th home run of the season to make it 11-2. McNeely then ended the game in the sixth with a two-RBI single.

On the mound, Calitri got the start and improved his record to 5-0 with the win. Calitri threw five innings, allowing two runs, just one earned, on four hits and struck out three.

Gillespie-Taylor threw the final inning of the contest as he gave up one run on two hits while striking out one.
