Walters State Baseball Coach Dave Shelton collects 400th career win

SUMTER, SC – Walters State Baseball Coach Dave Shelton earned his 400th career win on Saturday afternoon as the Senators took down USC Sumter, 3-0.

 

The Senators lost game one of the day to WVU Potomac State, 1-0. With the split, Walters State moved to 14-2 on the season. 

 

The 400th win for Shelton comes during his eighth season as head coach of the Senators. During that stretch, Walters State has averaged over 52 wins a season and just 12 losses. 

 

Under Shelton, The Senators have won five Regular Season TCCAA Championships, four Region VII Tournament Championships, and made four trips to the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, CO finishing 3rd (2015), 2nd (2018), 3rd (2019), and 7th (2021). 

 

Shelton came to Walters State in 2003 as an assistant coach. During that time, Walters State won 471 games, putting Shelton's Walters State total at 871 wins and just 211 losses, a winning percentage of around 80%.

 

Game One: WVU Potomac State 1, Walters State 0

 

A seven-game losing streak came to an end for the Senators in game one of the day as they failed to get the offense going.

 

Walters State had just two hits in the game, both coming from Landon Slemp. Slemp singled in the third and fifth. He also stole a base.

 

Wesley Scott got the start on the mound for the Senators and threw a complete game, falling to 3-1 on the season with the loss. Scott allowed one run on five hits and struck out nine. WVU's lone run came in the bottom of the fifth.

 

Game Two: Walters State 3, USC Sumter 0

 

The pitching was on point once again for Walters State in game two of the day as Kohl Drake improved to 4-0 on the season with the victory.

 

Drake pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out five. Drake has made five starts this season and has yet to give up an earned run, striking out 38 in the process.

 

Joey Mitchell pitched the final inning, striking out two and picking up his second save of the season. 

 

The Senators collected five hits in game two with all five coming from different players. Caleb McNeely, Colby Backus, Andrew Ott, Cole McCallum and Noah Gent each collected hits in the game. 

 

Walters State didn't mess around getting on the scoreboard in game two as Backus, the third batter of the game, drilled a 2-run home run over the fence. It was Backus' seventh home run of the season. 

 

The Senators added one more run in the game as McNeely singled in Gent to make it 3-0 in the fifth.

Walters State will play the same two teams on Sunday as they look to end the weekend on a high-note. The Senators will play WVU Potomac at 1 p.m. and USC Sumter at 4 p.m.
