Senators end weekend with 5-0 victory over Potomac State

SUMTER, SC – Walters State closed out their weekend with a solid pitching effort on Sunday afternoon, taking down Potomac State 5-0.

 

The final game of the weekend against USC Sumter was canceled due to the threat of rain. 

 

With the win, Walters State moves to 15-2 on the season. During their three games over the weekend, Walters State gave up one earned run. The pitching staff struck out 23 batters in 21 innings. 

 

Jake Knapp was the star in the game as he moved to 5-0 on the season with the victory on the mound. Knapp threw six innings, allowing no runs on three hits and striking out five.

 

For the season, Knapp has a 0.00 ERA through 19.1 innings of work and has struck out 26 batters. 

 

Landon Slemp pitched the final inning of the game, striking out two. 

 

At the plate, Corbin Shaw led the way with three RBIs. Nick Block had two hits in the game as well as the Senators totaled four hits. 

 

It was Shaw early for Walters State as he knocked in the first two runs of the game. The first run came in the first when he singled home Andrew Ott. Shaw then made it 2-0 in the third when he reached on an error, scoring Ott again. 

 

In the fifth, the Senators tacked on three more runs. Colby Backus made it 3-0 when he reached on a fielder's choice that scored Caleb McNeely. The RBI gave Backus his 25th of the year through 17 games. He's hitting .421 on the season.

 

Backus would later score when Shaw reached on an error. Shaw would come around for the fifth run, scoring on a passed ball.

Walters State will be back in action at home on Wednesday, taking on Cleveland Community College in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
