No. 1 Walters State outscores Young Harris JV 43-2 in doubleheader sweep

GAME ONE: No. 1 Walters State 20, Young Harris JV 0 (5 Innings) 

 

In game one, Kory Klingenbeck hit two home runs while Joey Mitchell made his longest outing of the season on the mound in the Senators victory. 

 

Mitchell got the start on the mound and improved to 5-0 on the season with a complete game shutout. Mitchell allowed just two hits while striking out eight. 

 

Along with Klingenbeck at the plate, Caleb McNeely and Declan Wiesner each hit home runs. Klingenbeck and Wiesner both drove in five runs while Landon Slemp and Corbin Shaw drove in two runs each. 

 

The Senators got the scoring going quickly in the game as McNeely led off with a home run. In the second, Walters State added four more runs to go up 5-0. Klingenbeck got things going in the inning with a two-run homer after Nick Block doubled to leadoff the inning. Wiesner then doubled home a run before Kruise Newman singled Wiesner home for the final run of the inning. 

 

Walters State bumped its lead to 10-0 in the third with five more runs. Shaw drove home two runs while Wiesner hit a three-run bomb that scored Shaw and Klingenbeck. 

 

Following a scoreless fourth, the Senators ended the game in the fifth with 10 runs. The runs came courtesy of a Slemp walk with the bases loaded, a Nick Dagnello RBI single, a Caleb Marmo bases loaded walk, a hit by pitch to Jack Sutton, a sacrifice fly by Dalton McLain, a Klingenbeck three-run homer, a Wiesner RBI single and a Slemp RBI single. 

 

GAME TWO: No. 1 Walters State 23, Young Harris JV 2 (5 Innings)

 

In game two, Walters State continued the scoring barrage with 23 more runs. 

 

Nolan Letzgus got the start on the mound and moved to 3-1 with the victory. Letzgus threw three innings and allowed just four hits while striking out four. Xavier Fosbenner pitched the fourth inning, allowing an unearned run on one hit, while Jacques Gillespie-Taylor pitched the final inning, allowing one run on two hits.

 

At the plate, McNeely hit his 21st home run of the season while Klingenbeck hit his third of the day. McNeely is now back in first place in the country in home runs. 

 

Shaw also drove in four runs while Cole McCallum and Marmo hit home runs as well. 

 

Walters State once again got off to a quick start with four runs in the first. Noah Gent doubled in the first run of the game before Block, Newman and Shaw singled home runs to make it 4-0. 

 

Walters State scored nine more runs in the third inning to go up 13-0. Newman started things off with an RBI single before Shaw and Andrew Ott singled home runs. After Shaw scored on a wild pitch, McLain singled in a run and McNeely crushed a two-run homer. Shaw concluded the scoring in the inning with a two-RBI double. 

 

The Senators kept the scoring going in the fourth with eight more runs. Those runs came on a Klingenbeck three-run homer, a Marmo three-run homer and a McLain RBI single and Slemp sacrifice fly. 

 

The scoring concluded for the Senators in the fourth with two more runs as McCallum hit a two-run homer.

Walters State will be back in action at home on Tuesday with a single nine-inning game against Roane State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
