Senators take two from USC Union

UNION, SC – No. 2 Walters State swept a doubleheader against USC Union on Tuesday afternoon, taking game one 11-1 and game two 19-4. 

 

With the wins, Walters State improved to 6-1 overall.

 

GAME ONE: No. 2 Walters State 11, USC Union 1 (5 Innings)

 

In game one, Walters State totaled 11 hits as they cruised to the victory.

 

Corbin Shaw led the charge for the Senators with two hits, both doubles, and three RBIs. Along with Shaw, Angus Pence hit his second home run of the season while Kio Lugo drove in two runs.

 

On the mound, Jackson Hull (2-0) got the start for the Senators and picked up the win. Hull threw 3.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four. 

 

Ty Cobb replaced Hull with two outs in the fourth and got the final out of the inning before Preston Allen pitched the fifth, striking out two while not allowing a hit. 

 

Walters State got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second as Pence walked with the bases loaded, scoring Keaton Ray. USC Union answered with a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game, but in the top of the third Shaw doubled two runs in and Ray doubled home Shaw to make it 4-1.

 

In the fourth, the Senators added five more runs as Pence homered, Shaw doubled in a run and scored on a wild pitch and Lugo singled two runs in that made it 9-1. 

 

The final two runs for Walters State came in the fifth as Cole McCallum singled in a run and Kurtis Reid scored a run on a groundout. 

 

GAME TWO: No. 2 Walters State 19, USC Union 4 (5 Innings) 

 

In game two, the Senators one-upped their game one performance with 13 hits while also drawing 10 walks. 

 

Shaw was the star again at the plate, totaling three hits, two doubles, and drove in five runs. Along with Shaw, Carter Oliff had three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs while Pence had two hits and drove in three more runs. 

 

On the mound, Cooper Morgan got the start and threw one inning while allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits. Morgan was replaced in the second by Riley Franklin (1-0), who threw two scoreless innings while striking out two. Franklin picked up the win.

 

Taz Butler relieved Franklin in the fourth and struck out the side before Karson Bonaparte finished things off with a scoreless fifth. 

 

Shaw once again got the Senators on the board first in the top of the first with a two-RBI single. USC Union answered with four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-2 lead, but the Senators added three in the second to regain the lead. Those runs came courtesy of an error that allowed Reid to score, a Deniel Ortiz sacrifice fly and an error that scored Caleb Marmo

 

Two more runs crossed the plate in the third for the Senators as Oliff grounded out, scoring Preston Wright, and Pence doubled in McCallum to make it 7-1. 

 

Walters State broke the game wide open in the fourth with 10 runs that made it 17-4 in favor of the Senators. Those runs came courtesy of a Wright two-RBI single, an Oliff RBI single, a Pence two-RBI single, a Newman walk with the bases loaded that scored Oliff, a Shaw three-RBI double and an error that scored Shaw. 

 

The final two runs for Walters State came in the fifth as Mason Smith hit a solo home run and Pedro Pache hit a sacrifice fly that scored Oliff. 

 

Up Next:

 

Walters State will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Chipola for four games. On Friday, the Senators will face Chipola at 11 a.m. before taking on Wallace-Dothan at 1:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Senators will once again play Chipola at 11 a.m. before closing things out at 1 p.m. against Central Alabama.
