Senators score 21 runs in win over Motlow State

TULLAHOMA, TN – Caleb Marmo hit three home runs on Sunday while Cole McCallum hit two as No. 2 Walters State defeated Motlow State, 21-13.

 

With the win, the Senators improved to 16-2 overall and 1-0 in TCCAA play.

 

Marmo and McCallum were unstoppable as Marmo drove in six runs while McCallum knocked in five. In 18 games this season, McCallum is hitting .500 with four home runs and 19 RBIs. Marmo is hitting .396 with five home runs, 10 RBIs and 27 runs scored. 

 

In Sunday's game, Kurtis Reid and Kruise Newman also hit home runs while Reid and Keaton Ray both drove in two runs. 

 

The Senators totaled 19 hits in the game. 

 

On the mound, Landon Crumbley (6-0) got the start and threw 5.2 innings. Crumbley gave up nine runs, seven earned, on seven hits while striking out two. Riley Franklin picked up his third save of the season with 3.1 innings of work, allowing four runs on four hits. He struck out two. 

 

The scoring started immediately for the Senators in the game as they put up an eight-spot in the top of the first. McCallum started things off with an RBI single before Corbin Shaw singled home Cooper Torres to make it 2-0. It was soon 4-0 after Ray singled in two runs, and Reid made it 6-0 with a two-run home run. Newman was the next batter, and he blasted a solo home run to make it 7-0. Two batters later, it was 8-0 as Marmo left the yard. 

 

Motlow answered in the second with five runs, but McCallum upped the lead to five in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run. The Senators added one more in the fifth on a fielder's choice that scored Marmo before Motlow scored five in the fifth and sixth to cut it to 11-10.

 

Walters State got some breathing room in the seventh as Torres singled home a run and McCallum hit his second homer of the day, a two-run shot that made it 14-10. Motlow once again answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Marmo hit a two-run shot in the eighth and Torres scored on a balk to make it 17-12.

 

In the ninth, four more runs came across for the Senators as Ray singled in Deniel Ortiz and Marmo hit a three-run bomb, his third of the game. Motlow scored one more in the bottom of the ninth, but that was all.

Walters State will be back in action on Monday for two more games against Motlow State. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. ET.
