Senators split doubleheader with Motlow State

TULLAHOMA, TN – No. 2 Walters State split a doubleheader with Motlow State on Monday afternoon, taking game one, 12-2, before falling in game two, 11-1.

 

With the split, the Senators moved to 17-3 on the season. 

 

GAME ONE: No. 2 Walters State 12, Motlow State 2 (6 Innings)

 

In game one, the Senators scored five runs in the sixth inning to end the game early.

 

The Senators hit seven home runs in the game, including four home runs in five batters in the sixth. The home runs came from Caleb Marmo, Cole McCallum, Corbin Shaw, Kurtis Reid, Keaton Ray, Will Cawthon and Cooper Torres. Shaw drove in three runs while Marmo, McCallum and Torres each drove in two.

 

Jackson Hull (5-0) got the start on the mound and pitched a complete game. Hull allowed two runs on six hits while striking out seven. Hull's ERA for the season now stands at 2.01 in five starts. 

 

Walters State got things going in the top of the first as McCallum hit his third home run of the series, a two-run shot that made it 2-0. It was 4-0 after the second when Torres blasted a two-run shot. 

 

In the fourth, three more runs came across for Walters State as Marmo hit a two-run home run, his fourth of the series, and Shaw singled home McCallum.

 

Motlow State scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to get on the scoreboard but Hull pitched out of a bases-loaded jam to limit the damage. In the sixth, the Senators went back-to-back-to-back as Shaw hit a two-run homer and Reid and Ray hit solo home runs. Pinch-hitting two batters later, Cawthon made it four homers in five batters with a solo shot to make it 12-2. 

 

GAME TWO: Motlow State 11, No. 2 Walters State 1 (5 Innings)

 

In game two, the Senators fell behind early and could never recover. 

 

The Senators collected four hits in the game, with Deniel Ortiz leading the way with a solo home run. 

 

On the mound, Bradyen Matthews got the start and allowed six runs on eight hits in two innings. Bradley Gagen replaced Matthews in the third and threw 2.1 innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on three hits while striking out five. Landon Slemp pitched a third of an inning after Gagen and gave up an unearned run. 

 

Motlow jumped all over Walters State to start with six runs in the first two innings. Ortiz got the Senators on the board in the top of the fourth, but that was all they could muster.

Walters State will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon as they host Southwest Virgina. Game one starts at 1 p.m. with game two to follow.
