Senators split doubleheader with Volunteer State

GALLATIN, TN – No. 1 Walters State split a doubleheader with Volunteer State on Sunday afternoon, dropping game one by a score of 23-6 before taking game two by a score of 6-2.

 

With the split, the Senators moved to 33-5 on the season and 12-3 in TCCAA play. 

 

GAME ONE: Volunteer State 23, No.1 Walters State 6 (5 Innings)

 

In game one, Vol State got runs early and often on their way to the win over the Senators. 

 

At the plate, Cooper Torres led the way for the Senators with a home run. Zion Taylor had the only other extra base hit with a double. 

 

On the mound, Jackson Hull got the start for Walters State and threw 1.1 innings. He allowed six runs, only two earned, on one hit. 

 

Following Hull, the Senators used Riley Franklin, Landon Slemp, Brenden Pomerleau, Ryan Bender, Preston Allen and Johnny Stevens to throw the final 3.2 innings. They allowed 17 runs on 11 hits. 

 

Walters State's runs came in the third inning on a Jarrett Martin RBI single and two-run homer by Torres and in the fifth on a Jackson Bryan RBI single, Preston Wright RBI single and Will Cawthon walk with the bases loaded.

 

GAME TWO: No. 1 Walters State 6, Volunteer State 2

 

In game two, the Senators bounced back nicely with a series-clinching win.

 

At the plate, Caleb Marmo and Deniel Ortiz led the way with two hits apiece. Marmo, Ortiz, Torres, Kruise Newman and Martin each drove in runs. 

 

Brayden Matthews (4-1) got the start on the mound and threw 4.1 innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out five. 

 

Taz Butler replaced Matthews with an out in the fifth and pitched the rest of the game. Butler allowed one run but no hits and struck out four. 

 

Vol State struck first in game one with a solo homer in the bottom of the second. However, the Senators responded with a solo homer by Torres in the third. 

 

Then, in the fourth the Senators took the lead as Ortiz hit an RBI single, Martin hit an RBI single, Newman doubled home Ortiz and Marmo scored Martin on a fielder's choice to make it 5-1. 

 

Walters State added to their lead in the fifth when Corbin Shaw scored on a passed ball. Vol State got a run in the sixth but that was all. 

 

Up Next:

 

Walters State will be back in action on Thursday as they host Roane State. Thursday's nine-inning game is set for 2 p.m.
